PORSCHE 911 (1964-1973) CAR HISTORY

Car review on PORSCHE 911

A triumph of development over design, the Porsche 911, launched in 1964, is still going strong. There have been countless variations, but first-generation pre-1974 cars are seen as the most classic. Built before impact bumpers, they have cleaner looks and are purer in conception. Conceived by "Ferry" Porsche (son of the company's founder) and styled by Butzi Porsche, the 911 has been honed year-by-year to iron out detail weaknesses and to conquer handling deficiencies inherent in having its air-cooled flat-six engine located behind the rear wheels. Fast and agile, the 911 is one of the most practical super cars, with rear seats and a formidable reputation for reliability.

All models had four-wheel disc brakes and five-speed gearboxes on manual cars. Front suspension was by wishbones and torsion bars, the rear tied down by trailing arms and torsion bars. Superbly communicative steering and faithful, pin-sharp handling endeared the car to many, though it has never shaken off the suspicion of unruly lift-off oversteer in extreme situations, promoted by the high inertia of the rear engine position.

The first cars used a 1991cc version of the SOHC flat-six engine producing 130 bhp. The Targa with removable roof panel was announced in September 1966. Top of the range was the 160 bhp 911S, with forged pistons and larger valves, which could do 140 mph (225 kph). The brakes were now vented but as always unservoed, for better feel. 1966 saw the debut of the classic five-spoke alloy wheels, hallmark of the early 911. In 1967 the 911L replaced the standard 911 (130 bhp, similar trim to 91 IS) and there was a new base-level 91 IT with 110 bhp. The semi-automatic "Sportsmatic", three speeds and no clutch pedal, is little fancied today. 1968 saw introduction of the B-Senes models with a 2.2in (5.6cm) increase in wheelbase - for better weight distribution and handling. Meanwhile, the new 9 HE model replaced the 911L, and there was now Bosch mechanical fuel injection for between 140 bhp (E) and 170 bhp (S), although the 110 bhp 911T kept its Weber carbs.

The 1969 C-Series models had 2195cc engines for more bottom-end torque. The flat six had larger valves, magnesium crankcase and lower compression; power outputs ranged from 125 bhp for the T to 155 bhp for the E and 180 bhp for the S, which had standard alloy wheels and a rear anti-roll bar. Faster 2.4 cars came in from September 1971, ranging from 130 to 190 bhp.

The ultimate early 911 was the Can-era 2.7RS with a lighter shell and stiffer suspension. Launched in Sport, Touring or Racing form, it was built for just one year (1972-73) as a homologation car for Group 4 racing. A bore increase gave 2687cc and 210 bhp thanks to flatter forged pistons and Nikasil cylinders. Only 500 were required for homologation, but the car proved so popular that Porsche built more than 1500. These ultimately early 911s, capable of 150 mph (241 kph), were characterized by a ducktail spoiler, flared rear arches and bold Can-era side decals.
