PORSCHE 911 (1963-) CAR HISTORY

Car review on PORSCHE 911

Today's PORSCHE 911 shares only a few nuts and bolts with the original edition of 1963, yet few modern classics have such a strong hereditary line and identity. The original PORSCHE 911 was to have been called the 901 until Peugeot reminded Porsche that it had the copyright on all model numbers with "01" in them, and so the magical formula was born.

Styled by Ferry Porsche's eldest son Butzi, it is still recognizable today, although spoilers and fat arches altered its elegant profile throughout the 1970s. The development potential of the flat-six engine, with one of the most distinctive growling engine notes on the road, seems limitless: it grew from just 2.0 liters to 3.6 liters in the latest versions, while power leapt torn 125bhp to 408bhp in the latest Turbo — leaving aside the 450bhp of the 911-based 959.

For drivers, the best of the "classic" 911 bunch was the 2.7 RS Carrera of the 1970s, a lightweight homologation special with stiffer suspension and a hallmark duck-tail spoiler. There have been some surprisingly mild variants, too, such as the Sportomatic with its semi-auto clutchless gear-shift and the 912, a budget model using the four-cylinder engine of the old 356.

Tail-happy handling has always been part of the 911's mystique, but much of that was cured early on when the wheelbase was lengthened. For modern 911 owners, talk of "lift-off (trailing-throttle) oversteers" is largely bar-room bravado. In any case, for those who harbored serious doubts about the handling, in the 1990s Porsche offered a four-wheel-drive model called the Carrera 4. More to the point was the car's superb steering and progressive, powerful brakes, which gave the driver such vivid road-feel.

Those who get hooked on the 911 rarely go back to other cars. The legends about build quality and reliability are all true, and longevity is another strong suit since all 911s have been built out of non-rusting galvanized steel since the mid-70s. The 911 image has changed over the years though: for the buyer of the 60s and 70s, the 911 was the choice of the seasoned connoisseur; by the mid-80s it had become a yuppie icon, a rolling symbol of fast, flash cash. For some, including Porsche, this image has lingered a little too long.

The PORSCHE 911 is an abiding legend that has defied ails attempts at replacing it. By rights it should have been killed off by the 928 in the mid-70s but somehow sales never slackened off: the worthy but uncharismatic 928 had none of the 911's enduring appeal and Porsche-speed manual has no plans to do away with its classic rear-engine coupe. After all, it has been company's meal ticket through some tough times. In 1997 tire 911 was replaced by an all-new flat-six-engine coupe with water-cooling. The name? 911
