Car Tire History - Manufacturer of tires and rubber products

Founded in 1872 as a company "manufacturing and selling elastic rubber goods," Pirelli secured its place in design history not so much with its car tires and cable sheathing but with its modern advertising. Albe Steiner, Bob Noorda, and Massimo Vignelli were among the designers who created the company's promotional graphics in the 1950s and 60s, and Armando Testa's aggressive "elephant" poster and Bruno Munari's subtle geometric layouts have lost none of their visual power.
Another important innovation came when Pirelli manager Aldo Bai and his team asked Marco Zanuso to explore possible applications for their new foam rubber, gommapiumo. Zanuso used the material to develop his famous Lady chair, whose success led to the establishment of Arflex in 1951. Munari soon created toys out of gommapiumo, and Gio Ponti designed the Pirelli Tower in Milan (1954-56), one of the most important landmarks of modern Italian architecture.
