JENSEN 541R (1957-1960) CAR HISTORY

Car review on JENSEN 541R

When Autocar magazine's testers drove the 125 mph (201 kph) Jensen 541R in 1958 it was the fastest four-seater car they had ever tested. Its low-revving six-cylinder four-liter engine (from the Austin Sheerline) made light work of this high-quality, streamlined glass-fibre coupe. Low revs and ultra-long gearing gave the car a uniquely relaxed character.

Elegantly styled by Eric Neale, the 541's full-bodied, sweeping roof line blended into a clean, rounded tail. It was a low-drag shape, too: Jensen recorded a lowest-ever 0.39 candela (cd) at the Long bridge wind tunnel.

Work on the original 541 began in early-1953 and the car appeared at that year's Earls Court show. The show prototype was aluminum but production 541s were built in the newfangled glassfibre which was light and ideal for the new car's rounded form and subtle detail. It covered a new chassis consisting of 5-in (12.7-cm) tubes, braced by a blend of steel pressings and cross-members to make a platform. Suspension was modified Austin A70 with a live axle spring on half-elliptic at the back. For the steering a cam-and-roller system was used. There were big drum brakes all round.
The 541R of 1957 had the fittest DS7 version of the Sheerline four-liter engine, with twin carburetors on the right and a reworked cylinder-head In conjunction with higher 7.6:1 compression and a "long dwell" the power rose to 150 bhp at 4100rpm with 2101b/ft (285.6 N m) of torque at 2500rpm.

Only 53 cars had the DS7 engine. Last of the 541 line was the S of 1961. This had a longer, wider body and standard Rolls-Royce automatic transmission. Styling never recaptured the earlier elegance and performance was down. Just 108 were built.
