Car review on FORD CONSUL/ ZEPHYR/ ZODIAC MK I/II

The 1950 Consul was the first of the modern post-war cars from Dagenham, with a whole raft of new technology that brought the big Ford bang up to date.

Out went the separate chassis frame, in came unitary construction for the first time, making for a lighter, stiffer structure. Front suspension was by Macpherson struts - the old Pilot had to make do with a beam axle - while brakes were fully hydraulic at last. Overhead valves for the 1508cc four-cylinder engine meant more power, though it wasn't until 1951 that the big Ford got much-needed performance in the 2262cc six-cylinder Zephyr. There was a power-lop convertible version by Car bodies, an Abbott-bodied estate and, from 1954, a top-of-the-range Zodiac with fashionable two-tone paint, whitewall tires and fog lamps.

The cars were well received and sold well, but Ford did not rest on their laurels: the Mkll Consul, Zephyr and Zodiac range arrived in 1956 with new, bigger styling and bigger four and six- cylinder engines of 1703 and 2553cc. The Zephyr/Zodiac could now top 90 mph (145 kph), the Consul about 80 (128). Again there was a Car bodies convertible - flash and now much sought-after - and a rare Abbott estate. From 1959, a sleeker MKII version had a lower roof line. Options included disc front brakes (from 1960), overdrive and Borg Warner automatic transmission.

Introduction of the MkIII in 1962 marked the end of the classic 50s-style Consuls, Zephyrs and Zodiacs. They had been among the best-loved British family saloons of their era.
