Pininfarina was extremely adventurous with its brief to design a new coupe for Fiat, which arrived in 1993. No one could ever mistake the Coupe for anything else, and even if its appeal was not universal, it had all the character you could ever wish for.

From the bold rising slashes in the flanks to the elegantly curved roof, and from the curious "double bubble" headlamp covers to the evocative circular tail lamps, the Coupe made a very strong statement.

Although in feel it seemed like a miniature Ferrari or Maserati, the new Coupe was actually based on the platform of the ageing Fiat Tipo. Considering this basis, Fiat engineers worked miracles to create such a fine-handling sports coupe as this. Limited slip differential kept the front wheels from spinning when the accelerator was pressed to the floor, while tire grip remained superb even at very high cornering forces.

At first, there was a choice of two 2.0-litre engines: a 142 bhp 16V unit or a 195 bhp Turbo. Both were quick but the Turbo was exceptional, having a 0-60 mph (0-96 kph) time of just over seven seconds. In 1995, the engine range was renewed, starting with the 131blip Barchetta 1.8 and ending up with a pair of brand-new five-cylinder 2.0 units; the most powerful had a turbocharger and no less than 220 bhp — and was almost indecently quick.

Accommodation was surprisingly spacious for four people, although that meant boot (trunk) space was rather restricted. The adventurous themes of the bodywork were extended into the cabin, such as an effective swage of painted metal running right across the dashboard and doors.
