The Coronet was introduced in 1967 and had sales of over 10,000 in its first year. It was the package people wanted, thanks to the high-performance, no-frills approach. In 1970 the Coronet R/T (Road and Track) didn't enjoy continued success, but it was still a great combination for the street- or strip-racing enthusiast. In base trim it used the 440 ci (7.2-litre) Wedge engine which was a more reliable and easier to maintain engine than the famed 'Hemi', though that was an option. Even in stock form, the 440 ci had 375 bhp (279 kW) with a single carb, or 390 bhp (291 kW) with the 'Six Pack' carb option. A torsion bar front and live axle rear, as per most in the Chrysler group, kept its ride quality high. In 1970 the car was only just surviving, as other powerful cars - most from Chrysler, in fact - took over. Its sales dropped to 2,615 and of those, only 13 had the Hemi installed.
