America's greatest sports car - and for many years its only sports car — is the Chevrolet Corvette. The name was born as long ago as 1953 when Detroit launched its plastic-bodied answer to the flood of European imports. A whole dynasty of 'Vettes followed on, up to the Stingray of the 1970s, which was as American as they come.

Then General Motors upped the stakes with a totally new generation Corvette launched in early 1983 as a 1984 model. Here was a thoroughly modern-looking sport scar that was still recognizably a 'Vette. The coupe shape was cleaner both aesthetically and aerodynamically and featured a hatchback and a removable roof panel.
The choice of glassfibre for the body remained, but the chassis was all new and the overhauled suspension used lightweight aluminum and even a plastic transverse spring.

The engine remained the faithful small-block Chevy V-eight, rated at 205 bhp. It initially drove through a four-speed automatic transmission, but soon a four-speed manual was offered with no less than three overdrive ratios. Performance was a strong suit: 0-60 mph (0-96 kph) in 6.6 seconds was incredibly fast in anyone's book, and the road holding was excellent.

A he-man clutch, tough steering and heavy brakes justified its reputation as a "muscle car". If there were criticisms to be made, they were minor: an awkward-to-view digital dash, harsh ride, irksome entry and snappy wet-weather handling.
Innovations in coming seasons included, from 1986, a new convertible and, from 1989, a six-speed gearbox and a three-position Selective Ride Control with adjustable shock damping.

While the standard backbone chassis looked as if it came from Lotus, the ZR1- then the ultimate Corvette of all — did actually owe much of its prowess to the English engineering firm (bought by GM in 1986). The 1990-model-year ZR1 was the new "King of the Hill", boasting a new, technically advanced LT5 375 bhp engine that transformed the 'Vette into a crushing super car: it could do 180 mph (290 kph) and reach 60 mph (96 kph) from rest in 4.5 seconds. Small wonder that this was the most expensive car in GM's history, retailing at £35,000 ($59,000). The ZR1's power went even higher in 1993, stretching to 411 bhp. Ultimately, the King dropped off the price lists in 1996.

Meanwhile, the standard Corvette range continued, also with more power (305 bhp). This generation of Corvette? was replaced by an all-new one in January 1997. The Corvette may never have been a huge seller or a big dollar-earner, but that wasn't the point: it was America's sport scar statement, and a remarkably good one. It's a fitting tribute that, thanks to over 40 years of continuous production, more Corvettes have been made than any other sport scar in the world.
