Corvettes had long been available both in the T-top and convertible form, but when the C5 arrived in the late 1990s, the company decided to produce a new version which would attract the real driving enthusiasts. It offered a hardtop-only version which came without such interior accessories as air-conditioning, power seats, electric door mirrors or a sound system. It also lost weight with the fixed top, some 70 lb (52 kg) in fact, because adding the roof meant the car didn't need so much strengthening in other areas. The car got the Z51 package which consisted of stiffer springs, anti-roll bars and shocks, and special 17-inch (432 mm) magnesium alloy rims with ultra low-profile tyres. The engine went unchanged in output, but the only option gearbox was the manual six-speed. Standard brakes were four-wheel vented discs that could stop the car from 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 126 ft (38 m).
