Bel Air was deceptive. On the outside it was ordinary, but underneath
it was potent. Chevrolet released it out as the muiscle car wars were
getting hotter in the early 1960s, and fit the 409 ci (6.7-litre) big-block
V8 which could chirp the tyres through each gear. In 1962 the engine was
rated at 380 bhp (283 kW), but with twin four-barrel carbs, this went
to 409 bhp (305 kW). Though the 409 could be had in any body style, most
chose the coupe because of its handsome looks. Weight could be shed by
ordering aluminum front panels from the factory, and Chevy even made
12 cars like this themselves, for drag racers only. Inside the car was
spartan, because most buyers were interested only in its performance,
and as a sign of this a small steering column-mounted 7000 rpm rev counter
was part of the dash. The car won the NHRA S/S (Super Stock) championship
in its debut year.
