The American obsession with the tail fin reached its zenith in 1959 and nobody did it bigger, or better, than Cadillac, makers of Detroit's premier luxury motorcar. The 1959 Cadillacs had the biggest fins in the industry, an outrageous 42 inches in height. Their jet-age imagery was accentuated by a pair of bullet-shaped turn and stop lights. Front-end styling was equally distinctive, with twin headlights and double-decker grilles across the board. 20ft long, 6ft wide and scaling two tons in weight the 1959 car came as a two-door coupe de ville, a pillar less four-door hardtop or as an even bigger Fleetwood 75 formal limousine. There was also a high-spec Fleetwood version of the stock four-door saloon. All were based on a simple perimeter frame chassis with drum brakes all round. Best remembered is the Eldorado Biarritz convertible, which had a more powerful 345 bhp version of Cadillac's famous 6.3-litre V-eight engine.

All these six-seater land yachts, the ultimate in four-wheeled glamour, came fully equipped with power-operated scat adjustment, electric boot opening and even automatic headlamp dipping over and above the obligatory power steering, automatic transmission, power hood in the case of the Biarritz, and electric windows. Air-bag suspension was one of the few optional extras on the Biarritz, which cost three times the cheapest Chevrolet that year. It was fast in a straight line at 115 mph (185 kph) but sheer weight and soggy springs gave it handling qualities comparable with a boat. Fuel consumption was in the 8mpg range, but economy was not then an issue in a country where this resource was still cheap.

Nearly four decades on, none of those matters. The 1959 Cadillac has passed into legend, symbolizing an era when the world's most powerful nation was at its most confident.
