Following the Second World War, Ettore Bugatti's fabulously engineered, but vastly expensive creations were at odds with the times, and production never really restarted. There were many attempts to revive the name but none was very convincing — until a man called Romano Artioli stepped into the arena. This canny Italian magnate managed to rekindle the Bugatti magic in spectacular fashion, but ultimately the dream proved overambitious and ended in bankruptcy.

The plan was grand: a state-of-the-art factory was built in northern Italy, industry greats were hired (including Paolo Stanzani as technical director and Marcello Gandini as designer — both of them effectively fired later on), and a brand-new V-twelve engine was created from scratch.

The new Bugatti EB110 was to be a superlative mid-engine super car, the sort of car that Ettore would have been making if he were still alive. The EB110 name was chosen as a composite of Ettore Bugatti's initials and the fact that the car was to be launched on the 110th anniversary of his birth.

The aluminum-bodied Bugatti's styling (created by an Italian architect) was dramatic but controversial: the lines were hardly harmonious and the traditional Bugatti horseshoe grille looked almost farcically small on the car's nose. Inside, meanwhile, the level of finish was superb and equipment levels were generous, but space was severely limited.

Mechanically, the Bugatti was highly advanced. Its centre piece was a V-twelve engine fitted with no less than four turbochargers and 60 valves, developing 553 bhp. There was a six-speed gearbox mated to a four-wheel-drive system and suspension, which delivered handling akin to a grown-up Lancia Integrale. Bugatti claimed a top speed of212 mph (341 kph) and stated that this was the fastest road car in the world; Jaguar with its XJ220 and McLaren with the Fl might have questioned this, but no one was in any doubt that the Bugatti was an extraordinarily fast and very capable machine.

By the time the EB110 was launched (at a lavish party in Paris in 1991), the super car sales boom of the 1980s was already well and truly over. The list price was a walloping £285,000 ($486,000) and, if that all seemed a bit pale, Bugatti also developed a lightweight SS model with a 611 bhp engine and up to 221 mph (356 kph) — total cost was an extra £50,000 ($93,000).

In the end, Artioli simply became too ambitious. First he bought up Lotus from General Motors in 1993, then he commissioned Ital Design to build a new four-door super saloon (sedan) called the EB112, but Ital Design stopped work on the project, claiming lack of payment. By 1995, Bugatti was bankrupt and its showcase factory lay tragically deserted. Unfortunately, it is not known exactly how many cars were built; Artioli claimed 154, including the one built for the German racing driver Michael Schumacher.
