BRISTOL 412 TO BLENHEIM (1975-) CAR HISTORY

Car review on BRISTOL 412 TO BLENHEIM

Bristol enthusiasts wept bitter tears when the 407 - Bristol's first Chrysler V-eight-powered model - hit the road in 1961. Out came the thoroughbred all-alloy straight-six engine — lovingly Grafted by Bristol themselves - and in went an iron V-eight, shipped over in a wooden packing case from Canada (to evade import duty) and hitched up to an automatic transmission. To add insult to injury, it even had push-button controls.

It was the only way out for Bristol: the sweet little six, a mere 2.2 liters and 110 bhp, was struggling with the weight of the opulent 406, and since Bristol could not afford to fund their own new 3.5-litre straight six, Detroit power was the only way to go.
It was the right decision. Bristol rode out every storm by keeping small, and selling alloy-bodied, separate-chassised cars to a discreet and discerning few. The shape changed over the years, but the proportions - tall, slim and long - remained consistent right up to the latest Blenheim, still available today,

By 1975, the 411 was the latest incarnation of the Bristol ideal. Radically different was the curious Zagato-styled 412 of 1975, a convertible coupe with big double roll-over bar. However, it still rode the classic 9ft 6in (2.89 meters) wheelbase chassis - which could be traced back to BMW’s, pre-war 327 coupes - and still had the6.6-litre Chrysler V-eight engine.
In 1976, the 412 became a convertible saloon (sedan) with a standard hardtop, while the S2 of 1977 had a smaller 5.9-litre engine. The rapid 140 mph (225 kph) Beau fighter of 1980 had an American Rotomaster turbocharger, beefed-up gearbox and a restyled front-end, and remained in production until 1992.

The curious 603E and 603S of 1976-82 featured new styling on familiar hardware. They replaced the long-running 411, whose alloy body was basically that of the 406 of 1958. The short-lived E was a 5.2-litre "economy" model, while the S had the usual 5.9-litre engine. Both had cruise control, air-conditioning and the latest Torque-Flite automatic gearbox with long-striding "lock-up" top (a locking torque converter) and self-leveling suspension.

The Brigand and Britannia replaced the 603 in 1982. The Brigand was turbocharged and could sprint to 60 mph (96 kph) from rest in under six seconds and reach a 150 mph (241 kph) top speed. The cars ran on alloy wheels and featured new front and rear styling.
The Blenheim of 1993 had yet another new front- and rear-end restyle, but the basic shape was the familiar 603/Britannia body. Bristol claimed that only the roof and doors were retained, but much of the interior looked familiar from previous Bristols, notably the-handsome binnacle and round white-on- black instruments.

The Blenheim was fitted with the latest fully managed and injected 5.9-litre Chrysler engine and four-speed automatic gearbox. There was no turbocharger this time, but economy was much better, and certainly the Blenheim made a consummate long-distance express for the wealthy enthusiast who wanted to be a little bit different owners included Liam Gallagher, lead singer of the UK rock band Oasis, and Virgin business entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson.
