In the 1970s and 1980s, BMW was the most successful Touring Car racing constructor, a remarkable feat since none of its cars was a "homologation special" — they were merely modified versions of prosaic road cars. That all changed with the M3, a legendary road car which also swept the board in racing.

According to BMW's advertising, "M is the most powerful letter in the world." M stood for Motor sport, a special division within BMW, which was responsible for racing and the development of advanced road-car projects. The M3 was actually based on the current BMW 3 Series, but Motor sport altered almost every component on the car.

The bodywork became aggressive, with its flared arches and spoilers, and four individual bucket seats in the interior. Under the body, the suspension and braking were beefed up and the gearbox had a race-style dog-leg first gear.

Most importantly of all, the M3 got a very special engine: a large-capacity four-cylinder unit fitted with a 16-valve head modeled after the M1. With 200 bhp available, it made the M3 outrageously quick. More than this, it was endlessly entertaining to pilot along twisty rounds, almost without vices. Very quickly the M3 became a legend.

Limited-edition Evolution models were even better, with enhanced aerodynamics and, in ultimate Sport III guise, a bigger 238 bhp, 2.5-litre engine. The most expensive M3 of all was the Cabriolet, individually hand-built by Motor sport staff.

When the old-shape 3 Series was retired in favor of the smart new shape car, there was of course an M3 version, but it was ruthlessly efficient rather than exciting. Many enthusiasts remember the first-generation M3 with greater affection, particularly its fabulously controllable handling and raw character.
