BMW has a strong reputation for producing powerful sporting coupes, its tradition stretching back to the earliest days. In the early 1970s, the BMW coupe ideal reached its zenith, the celebrated CSL becoming invincible on the track and accomplished on the road.
By 1975, BMW needed to develop a successor, and the car earmarked to do this was the 630CS/633CSi, launched in March 1976. Compared to the old CS series, the 6 Series was larger, more cosseting and more expensive - a grand tourer, which was extremely good at its job of whisking along the autobahns, but not a true sporting car. The 1979 628CSi, with its even smaller engine, did little to enhance the image.

BMW attempted to remedy a lack of sporting feel by fitting its venerable
3453cc engine into the 6 Series in July 1978, creating the 635CSL This engine was architecturally the same as that fitted to the Ml, though it developed less power (218 bhp). A far more sporting feel than the 633s was engendered by uprated dampers, springs and anti-roll bars and ventilated disc brakes.

It was really only a matter of time before BMW bit the bullet and fitted the full-house 24-valve M1 engine to create the M635CSi (M6 in the US). It shared the M1 specification very closely; with its light-alloy 24-valve head, twin overhead camshafts and central spark plugs, but owing to new induction and twin-pipe exhaust systems and the use of Bosch Motronic II digital engine electronics, it developed 9 bhp more than the Ml engine. The new M635CSi was a real road burner.

The more powerful 6 Series BMWs were extremely good cars, notable for their fine handling, luxury, refinement and quality. The successor, the 8 Series, was in many ways less appealing.
