By 1988, Aston Martin had been relying on its mighty V-eight model for no less than 20 years, and it desperately needed a new car to tempt super car owners. To design its car, it took the unusual step of asking several independent British car stylists to offer proposals, including Richard Oakes and Aston Martin veteran William Towns. The winner was John Heffernan's elegantly understated design, realized in aluminum by Aston Martin's skilled craftsmen.

The new Virage was unveiled at the 1988 Birmingham Motor Show and was greeted as the latest in a line of great British sport scars from the Newport Pagnell firm. It might have cost a six-figure sum, but its sumptuous specification, tremendous performance and hand-crafted quality were certainly appreciated by devotees.

In true Aston Martin tradition, each engine was hand-built and the name of the builder was placed on a plaque on the engine block. The familiar 5.3-litre V eight engine was given a four-valves-per-cylinder head, developed by the American tuning company Callaway Transmission 5/6-speed manual Engineering. Now power was up to 310 bhp, and even more impressive was the torque figure of 3401b ft (461Nm (Newton meter)).

That all spiraled up to new heights with the pumped-up Vantage model of 1992. Twin superchargers raised the power figure to 557 bhp and torque to just about the highest figure of any road car: no less than 5501b ft (745Nm) at 4000rpm. It was quicker than just about anything else on the road.

The most popular Virage model of all was the Volante, the convertible member of the family. Further choices were Shooting Brake (estate/station wagon) and Lagonda (four-door saloon/sedan) versions, a special 500 bhp 6.3-litre engine and a version simply called V8 Coupe with Vantage-style wide bodywork and "only" 350 bhp.
