| | ALVIS TD/TE/TF (1958-1967) CAR HISTORYCar review on ALVIS TD/TE/TFBy the time the Graber-styled cars came out in the late 1950s, Alvis of Coventry had seen its best days with pre-war classics such as the fast and beautiful Speed 20 and 4.3. Post-war car production became something of a sideline to the company's armoured vehicle interests, nevertheless, the TD, TE and TF were fine cars. Developed from the "Greylady" TC21, they were mature motorcars for discerning enthusiasts: luxurious, well built and well mannered yet with a surprising turn of speed. The TD's
shape -was the work of Graber, who had licensed Willowbrooks of Loughborough
to build the bodies in Britain. These cars, dating from 1956, were known
as the TC108G. Quality was not all that it should have been, and for the
TD of 1958 Alvis commissioned Parkward of London to build its bodywork,
while at the same time tidying up the rear of the roof line. Power 120-150 bhp
Powered by a 120 bhp version of the familiar Alvis three-liter straight
six, the TD could achieve 100 mph (160 kph) with ease and looked particularly
elegant in drop head form. Series II TDs had disc brakes, and, from October
1962, a desirable ZF five-speed gearbox of the type used in the contemporary
ton Martin. The four-headlamp 1963 TE had 130 bhp and could be bought with
automatic transmission or power steering. Best, and last, of the breed
was TF of 1965, which had a triple- carburetor 150 bhp engine and a top
speed of 120 mph (193 kph) with the five-speed box. By then the writing
was on the wall for Alvis as a passenger-car maker. Rover took a controlling
interest and stopped TF production in 1967.
