Launched at the 1966 Geneva Moror Show, the Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider was the last complete design by Battista Pininfarina, founder of the Turin-based design house. With sales initially disappointing (the previous Giulietta Spider’s best figure of 5,096 in 1960 was not exceeded until after the arrival of the Spider 2000 in 1972), who could have believed that the basic model would remain in production for 27 years? The shape wasn’t much admired at first, but the lines matured gracefully over the years through a couple of restyles culminating in the square-tailed cars of the late 80s that ceased production in 1993.

The classic Alfa twin-cam engine grew from 1960 through 1750 and even 1300cc variations to become a fully fledge two-liter in 1971. Experts rate the 1750 highest for its combination of sweetness and refinement, while even the 1600 offers lusty acceleration, and the two-liter offers the most torque. The cars could equal.
