Car review on ALFA ROMEO 164

Traditionally, Alfa Romeo produced real-wheel-drive sporting cars and was generally most successful with its smaller saloons and coupes. Its track record with larger cars was not very good, the 1970 Montreal and 1979 Alfa 6 being complex, poor-selling, problem-ridden machines.

That all changed with the 164, the first Alfa to emerge following Fiat's 1986 take-over of the group. Not only was the 164 quite the most handsome saloon (sedan) car of its day — thanks to Pininfarina's master hand — but it had sharp front-wheel-drive handling and, most importantly of all, it was built up to a quality that rivaled Germany's best. The interiors looked as if they had been designed by an architect.

The floor pan was shared with three other cars: the Fiat Croma, Lancia Thema and Saab 9000. However, Alfa installed its own range of engines, which was always the marque's best feature. The range started with a two-liter Twin Spark (two spark plugs per cylinder) and culminated in a three-liter V-six. All engines were capable of reaching 125 mph (201 kph). The ultimate Q4 model had four-wheel drive, six speeds and a 230 bhp Cloverleaf engine.

If there was one criticism of the 164, it was a tendency to suffer from torque-steer, which means pulling right or left under acceleration. Alfa Romeo addressed the worst of the problem early on and also developed a Super version with longer body-colored bumpers and chrome strips.

The 164 undoubtedly led a renaissance at Alfa Romeo, and re-establishing confidence in the marque. It left production in 1997 after a distinguished career.
