A Winning Compromise

There were old arguments that because the Mustang was upsized for 1967,

the 1967 Shelby, with its power steering and such, had gained too much bulk to be competitive. With fifty-seven percent of its weight on the front wheels, the GT-500 probably was not destined for road-racing glory, but the SCCA rulebook kept the GT-350s from B/Production competition more than any inherent factor.

Certainly the size of the cars didn't bother the 1967 Mustang hardtops competing in that year's SCCA A/Sedan series and winning the Trans-Am Sedan Manufacturers Championship. (Ironically, when Ford elected to support the Mustang race cars, it turned to Shelby American for behind-the-scenes expertise.) The true reason for the Shelby's exclusion went back to its original homologation: The class called for a two-seater, and the 1967 Shelby clearly had four seats.

For 1967, Carroll Shelby was forced to rethink his approach and blend it with Ford's intentions. But once again, Shelby American created and produced an eye- and ear-catching performance car. Marketed at the lowest price ever offered for a Shelby and promoted as an exciting highway GT touring car, its sales easily topped 3,000 units

If compromises are to be won or lost, Carroll Shelby certainly won this one. He may have had doubts at the time, but the concept shift Ford dictated to make the Shelby more luxurious did not substantially alter the nature of the car. The small-and big-block cars were genuine muscle cars, with responsive handling, quick steering, serious brakes, and a grand heritage. At this stage of the game, the marque was rolling.
