A Winner From the Start

All this preparation was done to win races, and proof of the Shelby success formula came with the debut outing of the first prototype R-Model. A winner popped right out of the box in north Texas when Ken Miles captured a B/Production victory at Green Valley Raceway on February 14, 1965. This success at an SCCA national event provided exactly the headline Ford had in mind when the Cobra-Mustang project began. With the pedal to the floor-board, the Shelby GT-350 was off on the right foot.

After the first two racing prototypes were built, R-Models began to be distributed to independent racers throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. Eventually, several would head for Peru, but the main action happened in the United States. According to Shelby American Automobile Club documents, made public in 1992, thirty-six R-Models—including the two prototypes—were built.

In this more modern era, when new car showroom decisions seem to be limited to color choice and stereo quality, it is astounding to think that in 1965 and 1966, a track-ready car could be ordered from and delivered to dozens of Ford dealerships. The prices of the cars generally ranged from $6,500 to $7,150, at least twice the cost of a street Mustang of the era but, in retrospect, fantastic bargains.

Even today, these Shelby R-Models are regarded as serious racing vehicles. To call them jarring is an understatement: When "seat of the pants" is redefined as "where a driver's butt muscles can detect a broken shock or a rock in the road," you know a race car is eager for action. Except in areas of electronic technology and tires, there are few ways today's vintage racers can improve on the old design.

The Shelby formula for success, invented on the spot for perhaps only a season or two worth of Ford Motor Company advertising claims, for boosting the Mustang image, did more than its task. It has stood the test of time.
