Shelby and the Mustang

Introduced in April 1964 with floor-mounted shifters and bucket seats, the Ford Mustang appealed to a broad cross section of the public. Stylish and sized for a personal touch, the cars appealed to sporty minded buyers of all ages. They could be delivered as economical six-cylinders with minimal options. Or they could be eight-cylinder automatics with deluxe interiors, perhaps with air conditioning or a center console. For special enthusiasts, Mustangs were available with four-speed transmissions and 271hp High Performance (or "Hi-Po") engines.

One year after that April 1964 debut, Ford introduced the Mustang GT package with its stiff suspension, dual exhausts, and front disc brakes. The combination of a Hi-Po 289ci V-8, the GT option package, and a four-speed transmission offered a genuine sports package. To purchase such a vehicle, someone had to have both desire for extra performance and additional dollars to pay for the options.

Naturally, with each step up the ladder of Mustang style and power, the cost of a car increased. Fewer buyers stepped forward. The Shelby Mustang, at the top rung of that ladder, effectively converted a snappy boulevard touring car into a gutsy, stiff, loud, and incredibly fast street-legal race car. The price was premium and the product was primitive. So when Carroll Shelby, in the summer of 1965, positioned the first GT-350s, the folks placing orders must have been a rare bunch, indeed.

It is fairly well known that as time passed, Ford Motor Company exerted in-creasing influence on the makeup, design, and marketing of the Shelby Mustangs. Over that period of approximately five years, Shelby became disenchanted with his project. For him, the concept became diluted and sour. He thought that the cars had become oversized, overproduced, and out of his control. It is a salute to his initial conception that no matter how Shelby perceived the situation and despite Ford's attempts to make the vehicles luxurious and easily marketable, the cars remained distinctive to the end. Of course, the end came in late 1969, by Shelby's request.

Even before then, Ford and Shelby fans knew how special and distinctive the cars were. Many realized that with governmental regulations and insurance industry pressures mounting, Detroit was unlikely ever to produce another factory race car. Some may have hoped that the Shelbys would be "worth something" down the road. Surely, few suspected that the uniqueness of the factory-built hot rods, the mys-tique of the Ferrari-beating company from California, and the enduring respect for Carroll Shelby would elevate prices so astoundingly. The Shelby's value at the beginning was founded on power, looks, and ability to win. Their value today is derived from the fact that nothing like them has appeared since.
