| "The Road Cars" In line with the concept of pleasing a broader segment of the car buying public, 1967 found many of the previous years' rough edges smoothed by additions of luxury touches: the Mustang Deluxe interior, power steering, power brakes, optional air conditioning, and twice as many exterior colors. Even the premier dealer brochure promoted the Shelbys as "The Road Cars." Still, changes such as the GT-500's 428ci engine option, the progressive rate springs, and the standard rollbar (a first for any production car, as were the shoulder harnesses actuated by rollbar-mounted inertia reels) kept the Shelby in a league of its own. Though the power steering system interfered with its 1965-1966 type steel tube headers, the GT-350 retained the race-proven Shelby-tweaked High Performance 289 engine. The more restrictive Mustang Hi-Po manifolds were used, and probably cost some horsepower. An article in the February 1967 Car and Driver gives credit for the fiberglass body panels to Chuck McHose, a Ford stylist who worked closely with Shelby American. In addition to helping distinguish the GT-350s and GT-500s from standard and GT model Mustang Fastbacks, the fiberglass pieces saved weight. Though the stock Mustang front bumper was mounted to stock support braces, the fiberglass Shelby hood measured almost 4in longer than a Mustang's. The pin-secured hood (which also used a standard-type hood latch) mated to a one-piece fiberglass nose that replaced the front fender extensions, grille surround, gravel pan, and lower valance. The grille-mounted high beams were positioned at the center until it was learned that certain states, including California, had statutes mandating minimum distance between headlights. Cars headed for those states started receiving lights at the outboard edges of the grille. Legend has it that, in Pennsylvania, one lawmaker who had counted on the purchase of a Shelby with inboard lights actually initiated a change in the state law to accommodate his wish. The fiberglass roof air extractor worked with an interior vent that could be opened or closed, and the first 200 or so 1967 Shelbys had small red running lights installed in the outflow of the C-pillar scoop. Activated by the brake pedal, the lights were deleted from the production run after those, too, were found to conflict with laws in several states. The lower quarter-panel air scoops fed fresh air, on most early cars, to the rear brakes. At the rear, the spoiler effect of the fiberglass deck lid was matched by fender extensions, and wide 1967 Cougar taillights were split by a Shelby-specific pop-open gas cap. Special Shelby tailpipe extensions were routed through the partial cutaways in a 1967 Mustang GT-style lower valance. Again, a stock Mustang bumper was used. Shelby exterior emblems included identical grille and deck lid nameplates, front fender badges, and lower body panel stripes, all specific to either the GT-350 or GT-500. Shelby emblems also appeared on gas caps and wheel centers. The base wheel for 1967 was a 15in steel one with a Shelby logo 1967 Thunderbird wheel cover. The $185 Shelby wheels offered to purchasers of 1967 models were Kelsey-Hayes 15x7 MagStar units (at only $151.74 on one owner's original invoice) and, later in the model year, the 15in ten-spoke cast-aluminum wheel was offered. The Deluxe Mustang interior, in either black or Parchment vinyl (with a few white interiors produced as well), included an 8000 rpm tachometer, aluminum insets for the dash area and door panels, an "optional" fold-down rear seat, and deluxe lap belts to accompany the harnesses. The unique wood-rimmed steeringwheel and a set of underdash gauges for oil pressure and amperes (fitted to an upside-down early Mustang Rally-Pac) topped off the performance touches. |
