| Rent-a-Racers Both Ford and Shelby are noted for having built cars that were exceptions to the norm. Hertz car production saw similar irregularities. In general, the GT-350Hs had chromed versions of the standard 14in 1966 Shelby Magnum 500 with Goodyear Blue Streak tires, radios with front fender-mounted antennas, and, after the first eighty-five units were built, automatic transmissions. Records located and evaluated by the Shelby American Automobile Club indicate that a number of Hertz cars were delivered with cast-aluminum ten-spoke wheels and that approximately seventy-five percent of the cars were black with gold stripes. It is believed that, late in the model year, some cars were delivered with Autolite 595cfm four-barrel carburetors. One significant problem with the rental units was the difficulty customers encountered with unboosted metallic-lined brakes. After much testing, Shelby American began to install MICO "piggy-back" master cylinders made by Minnesota Automotive. These boosters, which worked in conjunction with the existing master cylinders, led to their own set of problems due to great inconsistencies in brake pedal pressure from unit to unit. Shelby American had its hands full in producing 1,000 of these cars. For that reason (and because no one thought at the time that car-by-car details would be needed twenty-five or more years into the future), records of running changes, production line exceptions, and parts installed for assembly line expediency are scattered and confusing. Owners and prospective owners needing details on Hertz car characteristics (the information could be its own book) are encouraged to contact SAAC. Although there is correspondence that indicates a Shelby/Hertz project was discussed for 1967, the end of 1966 production brought the deal to a close. At that point, the repurchase clause concerning guaranteed depreciation brought pressure on Shelby American and Ford to dispose of the Hertz cars being retired from active rental. As John Craft noted in the September 1990 Mustang Monthly, a Ford employee named Marv Neely won a contest (called the Visibility 500) to sell the greatest number of ex-Hertz vehicles. Neely and his colleagues are to be credited with saving numerous GT-350Hs from less-noble circumstances. In retrospect, the Hertz cars, today referred to as Rent-a-Racers, provided Shelby American with genuine traction in the world of commerce. A deal of that magnitude carries its own legitimacy, and the reputation of the small California-based manufacturer grew beyond the increased exposure and production. It provided a fine chapter in the history of Carroll Shelby's manufacture of automobiles. |
