| The Production Line Rolls The street GT-350s produced by Shelby American caused a stir in the dealer network and production leapt beyond the original target of 100 cars. By March 1965, the small company outgrew its Venice plant and moved to a converted North American Aviation factory on West Imperial Highway, adjacent to the Los Angeles International Airport. The Shelbys also brought much ink to the automotive magazines, and, perhaps too often, caught the attention of law enforcement. One primary reason for the 1965 Shelby's instant and continuing reputation as a genuine performer is that the only modification Shelby American made strictly for effect was the paint stripe scheme. In most opinions, the eye-catching stripes were tasteful and mindful of the world-class Ford race cars of the day. But every change ordered from Ford and in-stalled by Carroll Shelby's factory personnel during the 1965 model year related directly to improved road-course performance and durability. Even after all the planning, ordering, and designing, Shelby American remained flexible and open to change. The steering wheels were downsized, then changed. The battery was returned to the engine compartment after problems arose. The hood design was changed to provide steel bracing for the fiberglass. And, toward the end of the model year, California-, Florida-, and New Jersey-bound GT-350s needed rear-exit exhaust systems. Whether brought about by customer input, legal problems, parts availability, or improved performance, changes were swift and positive. Carrol Shelby worked off a gut philosophy centered on torque, fun, g-forces, and potential profit. Having great employees was also a key. The designers, test drivers, team managers, fabricators, transport drivers, and office employees made up a genuine team. With that help, plus his grass roots manufacturing expertise and ability to charm the automotive media, Shelby was the man for the moment. The 1965 Shelby Mustang proved it. No matter what Ford thought it needed, Shelby produced the car he wanted. In the beginning, demand for 1965 Shelbys had to grow to match production. The situation quickly turned and, for a while, demand outpaced output. Subsequent years' changes would lead us to believe that Shelby's first version of the specialty Mustang might have been too rough-and-ready for the majority of Ford dealers to market. Today, those premier models are most highly prized. Whos was right? Who can say? The Project was right, and no one will argue that fact. |
