GT-350 Drag Cars

According to factory paperwork located by SAAC, nine 1965 and four 1966 GT-350s were built specifically for drag racing. Don McCain, a Shelby American sales representative, conceived of the idea to campaign a Shelby GT-350 at West Coast tracks. Racing fabricator and engine builder Bill Stroppe was asked to help create a car that would be legal for National Hot Rod Association competition.

To protect Shelby American from customer complaints about blown engines, all non-factory racers were delivered with the stock Shelby version of the High Performance 289ci engine. But the rest of a drag GT-350 was designed for a single purpose.

The best time registered by one of these factory drag cars was a 12.68 turned by Gus Zuidema at Lebanon Valley, New York.
