| The End of the Road The 1969 model was, for all intent, the final Shelby Mustang. Carroll Shelby had seen his small manufacturing operation outgrow two facilities, generate volumes of dominating race cars, and bring unending attention to Ford and to the teams and work force of Shelby American. He also had seen it moved away from California and closer to Ford, and had seen the initial, highly successful "Cobra-Mustang" program become twisted by the demands of the corporation and the marketplace. He had seen the muscle cars of the era begin to receive increased scrutiny from the powers of government and insurance. He had seen what happens when a pet project outgrows its purpose. None of it looked good to a stubborn, independent, promo-minded, throttle-jumping, race-winning competitor. Shelby had created rare cars in 1965; only several years later, automobiles were, to his mind, boulevard cruisers headed in a direction he did not comprehend or enjoy. He asked Ford Motor Company to bring the pact to an end. Almost 800 1969 Shelbys remained unsold as Ford's 1970 sales season began. To prevent their instant devaluation and to ease their sale through Ford dealerships, the remaining 1969 stock was converted into 1970 models through minor changes and the major change of updating their windshield VIN plates. To remain within the law, Shelby Automotive asked the FBI to oversee the renumbering process. To update the cars, black stripes were added to the hoods, door data decals were changed, and emissions controls were brought up to 1970 standards. Lower front spoilers, similar to those on Boss 302 Mustangs, were shipped with the 1970 Shelbys to be added by dealers after the hazardous rides on the transport trucks. Oddly, there are conflicts in the old paperwork regarding the total number of 1969-1970 Shelbys produced. The official Ford tally, based on a document from 1969, is 3,153 units. But the Shelby American Automobile Club, based on serial numbers observed, holds that as many as 3,294 were made. Either way, looking back, the numbers indicate a reasonably successful swan song sales record. Finally, the production operation ceased. Fortunately, in intent and image, the Shelby maintained its reputation and mystique through the waning days of the era. Wonderfully, today, it all survives. |
