1965 Shelby GT-350

The Shelby GT-350, a high-performance version of the smash hit 1964 1/2 and 1965 Mustangs, was created to help Ford beat the competition in dealer showrooms. The GT-350 racing models whipped opponents everywhere else, too.

Detroit always has valued its charade of industrial espionage, the endless insider talk that fires up market strategy and stokes the flames of product development. In mid-1964, Ford knew it had a winner with the Mustang. Its bucket seats, floor-mounted shifter, long hood, and personal size had won so many admirers that the hardtops and convertibles set sales records from the first introductory hoopla. But planners recognized that sales of a "one-trick pony" could suffer when other manufacturers introduced similar vehicles. They had heard the rumors and seen the "spy" photos. Barracudas were in the stores; the Camaros and Firebirds were on the way. Market position was sure to be threatened, and the Mustang's success, a huge corporate victory, needed to be preserved.

That August, with assembly plants phased out of 1964 1/2 Mustang production and already building the 1965 Mustangs with alternators instead of generators, different engine and color choices, and trim changes, the marketers were faced with a new round of promotion. Checkered flags seemed an exciting theme.

"When you start the [1965 GT-350] engine, you're first impressed with a raucous note from the twin exhausts. They're actually louder inside the car, because there's no insulation or undercoating.

"The GT-350, in fact, develops so much cornering force that the idiot light came on and the gauge wavered (it has both) on several occasions due to oil surge in the sump.

"Our best was just under 17mpg when driving at steady legal speeds on freeways. The low, 11.2, came during performance testing. Average for our 900-mile test was 14 mpg."
