The Woodward Avenue Race Shop

Chrysler's fledgling race group was faced with a corporate structure that was not experienced in building the race cars needed to get the job done. The development of the 426 Hemi for NASCAR and sanctioned drag racing made that clear. There was no convenient place to do prototype development cars at Highland Park. In order to do the job professionally and avoid corporate red tape that would slow progress, a separate facility had to be found.

Dick Maxwell joined Chrysler in February of 1959 and graduated from the Chrysler Institute two years later. He joined the Ramchargers and immediately began working in the race group on Chrysler's drag-racing efforts. It was clear to Maxwell, as well as others in the race group, that they needed a place to build their test cars.

"There was really no place inside engineering where we could do the sort of things we wanted to do," Maxwell says. "We needed a specialized facility where we could do prototype race cars, or whatever."

After some searching. Hoover felt he had found the ideal building: an old Pontiac dealership on Woodward Avenue that had gone out of business. Its location was appropriate, too. Woodward Avenue had become the street to cruise—and race. It had developed a mystique and was known to enthusiasts all over the country.

Dan Mancini was put in charge of running Chrysler's new race-car shop. Mancini had joined Chrysler in 1953 as a driver and mechanic, and quickly moved on to the dynamometer lab. Later, he was responsible for engine build-up for the engines that were tested in the lab. This was followed by work in the carburetor lab. It was while working there he learned of the Ram-chargers and became involved. Hoover chose him to supervise the running of the garage.

Mancini gathered a crew of five mechanics from within Chrysler with a keen interest in racing and skill in engine building and car fabrication. They were Roger Lindamood, Larry Knowlton, Fred Schrandt, Dan Knapp and Ted Macadaul.

"This was where we built the racing mules for testing," Mancini says, "whether they were for drag racing or NASCAR. Tom Hoover and Jim Thornton supervised the drag cars and Larry Rathgeb handled the stock cars."
