| Vehicle Modifications to Accept the 426 Hemi Due to the size of the 426 Hemi, the right front shock absorber tower in the B Bodies required modifications. The power brake-cylinder booster had to be moved to clear the valve cover. However, according to Bradley's letter, the booster would have to be removed entirely for removal of the number-seven spark plug or the valve cover for valve adjustment. The left valve cover was modified to clear the battery and battery tray. Also, on C-bodies, a dash panel depression was required to clear the right valve cover. Due to the air cleaner's size, the hood hinge torsion bar position and support bracket had to be modified. On B Bodies, the dash panel in the area of the heater motor depression required a change for proper valve cover clearance, and the heater hose routing and fittings had to be changed, also for valve cover clearance. Electrical wiring needed to be changed too. It was thought that shield-ing of the starter wiring harness might be needed. Manual transmission cars required a remote-mounted starter solenoid necessitating special wiring. Finally, underneath the car would be a new dual exhaust system designed for the 426 Hemi. It used 2 1/2 in. exhaust pipes running to canister mufflers, with 2 1/4 in. outlets. On January 29, 1965, a powerplant memo was released. It consolidated previous letters and memos regarding the street Hemi and authorized appropriate design and drafting to begin. Titled "Chassis-Powerplant Design Release Memo," it affected all bodystyles except station wagons. Under "Action To Be Taken" the memo read: "Approval has been given Product Planning's request for the release of a new 426 cu. in., 2-4 bbl., Hemi-head street package for 'B' and 'C' Series. The 'B' Series package has been designated as the A102 program and will be offered as a special equipment engine option on all 'B' Series Belvedere, Coronet, Plymouth, and Dodge models except station wagons. Because of the timing involved, this engine option is to be handled as a late product package." This meant that production of cars with Hemi engines would begin later than the normal start of model-year production in August. The memo continued: "The 'C' Series version (i.e.,1967 model year) of this street package has been designated as the A103 program and usage will be expanded to include Chrysler sedan models. In addition, several engine revisions such as the incorporation of hydraulic tappets and thermal-controlled cast pistons are intended, and air conditioning is desired for 'C' Series 'B' and 'C' Bodies." The memo clearly stated that at that phase of product planning, it was envisioned Chrysler would offer the street Hemi package as an option in full-size Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler cars. During the early months of 1965, this was dramatically scaled back. It was decided to initially offerthe426 Hemi in the new Dodge Charger and the Plymouth Satellite for 1966. With the introduction of the street Hemi, the famous Maximum Perfor-mance Package race Hemi cars that had been offered in 1964 and 1965 would be canceled. This made sense because the new street Hemi could be raced stock or modified to compete in the class desired by the racer. In September 1965, the Chrysler Corporation Engineering Office issued a publication titled, "Chrysler Corporation's 'Hemi-426' for 1966." It was meant to give a complete description of the street Hemi in response to countless requests from magazine editors, newspapers and interested individuals. In part, the publication read, "Because of the increased demand and popularity, the hemi-head engine is now available as a regular production option for 1966 Plymouth Belvedere and Dodge Coronet. Belvederes powered by this high performance option are identified by the emblem 'HP2' on the fenders. Coronets by the '426 Hemi' medallion." Initially, the HP2 emblem on 1966 Hemi-powered Plymouths raised the obvious question. What does it mean? It meant High Performance Plymouth. While the Dodge medallion was to the point and self-explanatory, the Plymouth badge was curiously vague. After several months' production, the HP2 medallion was replaced by the 426 Hemi emblem. A supplement to this publication dated November 22, 1965, listed some changes and recommendations. The TorqueFlight-equipped Hemi cars now received a supplementary oil cooler mounted ahead of the main radiator to cool the transmission fluid. Optional front disc brakes were still in the works and would be available as a factory-installed option soon. The supplement went on to give recommended oil, and the changing interval for both engine oil and transmission fluid. |
