Racing Parts Procurement

A key facet in the 426 race Hemi story is the procurement of parts. It's one thing to design and manufacture the parts, but once made, how did they get to the engine lab for assembly and testing and to the racers themselves? The product lines of Dodge, Plymouth and Chrysler had their own system for procuring parts, but the race group had no such system; one had to be created. The man responsible for setting up the racing parts procurement system was Brian Schram.

Schram joined Chrysler in 1949 as a clerk at the Dodge plant. In 1955, he had the opportunity to join the product engineering office at Dodge, building new-car prototypes and procuring the parts. By 1960, he was working for Gale Porter and Frank Wylie, ensuring parts supply to Carl Kiekhaefer and Lee Petty. Through Porter, Schram began to help Robert Cahill in Dodge's drag-racing program, procuring parts first for the Max Wedge 413 and 426 and then for the 426 Hemi. The Ramchargers also turned to him to meet their racing parts needs.

Schram established a parts depot at Dodge's Product Planning Lynch Road garage. He operated the depot by himself at first, systematizing everything from the air cleaner to the oil pan and every part in between. As the 426 Hemi stock-car and drag-racing programs mushroomed, Schram was assisted by Gene Carr, Dave Johnson and Mo David.

Notification of a parts requirement would come to Schram via a memo, usually from an engineer affiliated with the race group. "For example," says Schram, "Dick Maxwell would send me a Speedimemo stating, 'Send Sox and Martin two Hemi cylinder heads,' or something like that. I'd crate the parts and take them to Detroit Airport for shipment to the racers."

Schram says the stock-car racing parts program was structured differently. Race-car builder Ray Nichols, under contract to Ronnie Householder in charge of Chrysler's stock-car racing program, would receive the parts from Schram; the parts were not sent directly to the racing teams themselves.
