| The Elephant Motor Reigns Supreme Chrysler's decision to stop production with the 1971 model year had long-term positive effects. It retained for the Hemi an image of the ultimate street performance engine; all street Hemis were horsepower kings. Regardless of whether it was a 1966 Charger or a 1971 Hemi 'Cuda, each churned out 425 hp. Consequently, there were no 250 hp 426 street Hemis with anemic camshaft timing, wheezing through a single-exhaust system with catalytic converter. The largest and most powerful beast to walk the face of the earth is the elephant, and for this reason the 426 street Hemi earned the nickname Elephant Motor. Ceasing production of the street Hemi in 1971 kept it that way. The Hemi's bloodlines, so to speak, remained pure, untainted by any emissions-choked evolution. Chrysler seriously looked into building a big-block for the seventies having Hemi headswith numerous modifications to reduce manufacturing costs and to comply with upcoming emissions standards. Known as the Ball-Stud Hemi to those working on the program, the A279 engine program was intriguing in its concept. The idea was to combine the hemispherical-combustion-chamber cylinder head with current B and RB cylinder blocks. It would feature a new, less-complicated valve actuation using ball-studs at each stamped-metal rocker arm, instead of the forged rocker arm and shaft. The head-bolt pattern of the B and RB engines was to be retained. To literally get around this problem—the same one encountered when the 426 Hemi was being designed—the intake and exhaust valves were rotated around the hemisphere. This was a necessary compromise to achieve economical valve-train assembly. The A279 Hemi actually reached the engineering prototype stage and several engines were built. The engines were tested in the dyno labs that were still running tests on the 426 Hemi. Output was disappointing at first, but it soon surpassed that of the 440 V-8, although it stopped short of the 426 street Hemi. This engine could have served a variety of large-displacement applications in Chrysler cars and trucks, without tarnishing the image of the 426 street Hemi, but the corporation decided not to approve production of the A279. The void left by Chrysler when it ceased production of the 426 would eventually be picked up by the great names in racing engines and, two decades later, by Chrysler Corporation itself. |
