| Changes to the 426 Street Hemi Throughout its six years of production, the 426 street Hemi's performance remained the same: 425 hp at 5000 rpm with 490 Ib-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. Had it remained in production beyond 1971, it would have suffered the same eventual fate as the other engines in Chrysler's line-up in particular and the auto industry in general. Tightening emissions controls and lower-octane unleaded gas forced the lowering of compression ratios, retarded ignition timing and conservative camshaft profiles. Government legislation of the automobile was forcing the de-emphasis of performance. It did not make fiscal or mar-keting sense to attempt to certify the 426 Hemi in the face of these realities, and 1971 was chosen as the last year of production. Despite its steady power ratings over its six years, the 426 street Hemi did receive some modifications. The engine block remained unchanged until 1970, when a new block designed for super-charged and fuel-burning racing applications with heavier main webs and cylinder walls was introduced. According to Chrysler, all Hemi blocks with a casting date on the side of the block after January 19, 1970, had these im-provements. Three different camshafts were used in the 426 street Hemi. For 1966 and 1967, the mechanical-lifter cam had 276 deg. of intake and exhaust duration with 0.46 in. lift. In 1968, Chrysler introduced enough changes to the 426 Hemi to call it Stage II. It included a camshaft with a longer duration of 284 deg. for both intake and exhaust, and a slightly higher lift of 0.47 in. The factory rating of the engine, however, remained unchanged. Additional changes for the Stage II Hemi included single instead of double valve springs having 279.5 Ib. spring pressure at 1.37 in., full rubber umbrella-type valve stem seals instead of the Teflon scraper-type, new Moly-filled piston rings, and a 6 qt. oil pan with windage tray. In 1970, Chrysler introduced a hydraulic-lifter camshaft having the same specifications as the 1968 and 1969 mechanical cam to reduce maintenance. Interestingly, Chrysler did not do away with the adjustable rocker arms, but retained them. The hydraulic camshaft was carried over for 1971. Due to the new hydraulic lifters, new pushrods had to be designed. New springs were also used having 320 Ib. pressure at 1.37 in. This engine is considered by some to be Stage III, and this Hemi is the most troublefree to maintain. |
