Building the 426 Street Hemi.

The 426 street Hemi was assembled at Chrysler's Marine and Industrial division in Marysville, Michigan. The street Hemi went through its own pre-production testing program almost as tortuous as the race Hemi. These tests were run to verify its rated output and determine its durability.

Horsepower ratings of the day were always the topic of conversation and speculation. The enthusiast magazines debated where a given engine was grossly overrated or deliberately conservative. It turned out the factory rating of the 426 street Hemi was literally truth in advertising.

"The factory rating for the street Hemi of 425 horsepower was right on," Ted Flack recalls from his days in the dynamometer labs. "When we did a scuff test, we'd fire up a green engine— no hours on it—and run it at max horse-power for two hours. Those things made 425 horsepower like clockwork."

To enthusiasts familiar with the racing Hemi, the beauty of the street Hemi was knowing the engine underwent the identical manufacturing and assembly procedures as the circle-track and drag-racing engines. This had to be the case because the 426 Hemi Dodges and Plymouths now available in Chrysler showrooms truly were street/strip machines. Chrysler could not afford to suffer reliability problems with this engine which had achieved such notoriety in NASCAR, NHRA, AHRA and USAC competition. It had to uphold the Hemi's racing heritage. Chrysler maintained this level of excellence by constant quality control.

"I remember when that engine went to the Marine & Industrial area," Oscar Willard says. "We had continuous checking for them. From every batch of blocks they received over the years from the foundry they would usually send one or two of them into Highland Park, strain gauge them, then cut them up with a big bandsaw into minute pieces to determine residual stress level in that batch of blocks."
