The 426 Hemi Drag Cars

It was the production of the 426 Hemi-powered drag cars that ostensibly made the Hemi a production engine. How many engines constituted a production engine? Curiously, this was a nebulous point with NASCAR, and no engineers at Chrysler today can remember any definitive minimum production run specifically requested by NASCAR for homologation. Bill Weertman and Bob Lechner, however, did state in their SAE paper roughly how many 426 drag-race Hemis Chrysler built.

"Immediately following the initial introduction of the engine," they wrote, "a production run of several hundred drag racing engines and cars were planned to be built. The production of the several hundred drag engines was completed by the end of the 1964 model year. Another production run of several hundred drag engines was made for the 1965 model year automobiles, with a considerable weight decrease for the engines obtained by use of aluminum and magnesium components."

The Dodge and Plymouth factory drag cars truly were set up for the strip. The 12.5:1 compression ratio 426 Hemi was factory rated at 425 hp at 6000 rpm, but to racers who knew better, this rating was obviously conservative. The standard rear-axle ratio was a Sure-Grip 4.56; optional ratios available ranged from 2.93 to 5.38. Dual Carter AFB four-barrel carburetors sat atop the short-ram aluminum intake manifold. The cars came standard with the Torque Flight three-speed automatic transmission. The A-833 four-speed manual transmission was optional.

Dodge called its Hemi the Dodge 426 Hemi-Charger. In its booklet Dodge added this disclaimer in bold type to discourage any would be racers from taking the car to the public streets:

"The Hemi-Charger 426 engine is designed for use in supervised acceleration trials and other racing and performance competition. It is not recommended for general every day driving because of the compromise of all around characteristics which must be made for this type of vehicle. In view of its intended use this vehicle is sold "As Is" and the provisions of Chrysler Corporation's manufacturers passenger car warranty or any other warranty expressed or implied does not apply."

In the booklet section describing features, it stated a lightweight aluminum front-end package was available as optional equipment for better weight distribution. This included aluminum fenders, hood, dust shields, front bumper, bumper-support brackets and doors. Door glass and front quarter window winders were replaced with plexiglass and the window winders were eliminated. The rear window was replaced with 0.08 in. tempered glass. The hood was fitted with a large air scoop to feed colder, denser air to the angled, oval air filter spanning both carburetors.

"The Super Stock drag-race cars were intended only for drag-strip use," states Troy Simonsen, "but were production-built cars and we built a lot of them, both manual and automatic. They had a minimum amount of equipment in them. You could take one out the door, put a set of M&H tires on it, uncork the headers and go turn 11.50."

Naturally, this was the vehicle of choice for the Ramchargers and they did extremely well with it. At the American Hot Rod Association (AHRA) Summer Nationals, the Ramchargers achieved an 11.06 sec. elapsed time in the quarter-mile at 132.62 mph, seizing the Top Stock Eliminator title. At the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Nationals in Indianapolis, where the Hemi blocks had been cast, the Ramchargers set an NHRA record of 11.23 sec. at 130 mph in the Super Stock class.
