Used Cars: Volkswagen Announces Voluntary Safety Recall of 1999-2005 Model Year Passats
Volkswagen Announces Voluntary Safety Recall of 1999-2005 Model Year Passats
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., April 4, 2008 -- Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. has announced a voluntary recall of all gasoline powered Passat models from 1999 through 2005 for inspection and repairs, if required.
Some Passat vehicles with an automatic transmission may have an underbody heat shield that could be subject to damage. A damaged heat shield, in contact with the vehicle exhaust system, could create risk. These heat shields will be inspected, and an additional heat shield will be installed.
Additionally, some vehicles equipped with 1.8T engines have a fuel line that requires inspection and potential replacement. A small number of vehicles equipped with 4Motion all-wheel-drive will be inspected for potential damage to a fuel tank ventilation valve.
Owners and drivers of the 410,000 potentially affected vehicles in the United States are encouraged to immediately proceed to the nearest authorized Volkswagen dealer or qualified workshop if a fuel smell exists.

Used Cars: Auto Body Panels Expands Into Six New Markets, Partners With Leading Auto Recy
Auto Body Panels Expands Into Six New Markets, Partners With Leading Auto Recyclers
CINCINNATI, Jan. 4 -- Auto Body Panels (ABP) today announced a major expansion and the creation of new partnerships with key automotive recycling operations in six new markets across the nation. This move creates a strategic affiliation between Auto Body Panels, one of the nations' largest importers of automotive aftermarket parts, and leading independent automotive recyclers. ABP has launched this growth by opening new warehouses in Charlotte, NC; Chicago, IL; St. Louis, MO; Kansas City, MO; Knoxville, TN; Little Rock, AR, and Fort Worth, TX.
"Auto Body Panels has teamed up with some of the best automotive recycling operations across the nation in order to give body shops and collision repair facilities a choice," explains David Morris, CEO of Auto Body Panels. He notes that, "This move comes in response to a competitive monopoly put in place by the nation's largest salvage/aftermarket company. Now we are giving our customers a 'one stop shop,' and they will be able to order all of their aftermarket parts, and their recycled parts, from the same distribution chain and utilizing the same logistics solutions."
Each of the independent automotive recycling operations selected by ABP as partners also happen to be a member of URG and PRP Absolute. "This group approached me with the idea to create a new partnership," says David Morris. "ABP was already doing business with each of the automotive recycling facilities involved. But the idea of opening new distribution facilities and sharing logistics intrigued me, because it created such a good benefit for the end customer -- body shops and collision repair centers. We decided to respond aggressively, first with six new locations, and more planned nationwide within the next two years."

Used Cars: Audi Leads Effort to 'Optimized' CO2 Routes
Audi Leads Effort to 'Optimized' CO2 Routes
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 15 -- Audi Engineers at the company's California Electronic Research Labs believe that the next step in reducing carbon dioxide emissions will come through "connected" vehicles.
Ralph Weyler, Member of the Board for Sales and Marketing, Audi AG, announced today at the Los Angeles Auto Show that Audi is working with three California universities on six multi-year research projects. The efforts are aimed at reducing CO2 emissions through more intelligent interactions between driver and car, cars on the road, and in the collection and distribution of real-time traffic patterns. The name of the project is "Clean Air, a Viable Planet." Audi researchers are working with the University of California at Berkeley, the University of California at Riverside, and Stanford University.
Daniel Rosario, Audi manager of Connected Vehicles, in explaining the research said that the shortest route to a destination is not necessarily the optimized CO2 route.
"The path between two points can be measured in distance, but it can also be measured in the amount of carbon dioxide that our vehicles emit," he said. "Through this research we believe that information provided by connected vehicles will allow a driver to decide the best route to achieve the lowest CO2 emissions."
The technology exists today to connect vehicles, now researches and engineers need to integrate these technologies into what Rosario calls an "Intelligent Vehicle Network".
"The goal is sustainable transportation," said Rosario. "Driving behavior can improve fuel efficiency by 20 percent. This initiative could improve that by another 20 percent."

Used Cars: Fuel Prices Rise; So Should Attention to Tire Inflation, Says Goodyear
Fuel Prices Rise; So Should Attention to Tire Inflation, Says Goodyear
AKRON, Ohio, Nov. 8 -- As American drivers begin to think about increased holiday travel in coming weeks, the cost of fueling the family car is higher than it has ever been in November. With this in mind, officials at the country's largest tire manufacturer, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company , are reminding motorists to seek an often overlooked cost advantage at the pump - the air pump.
Tires' importance at the gas pump is growing as gas prices climb. As of November 7, average U.S. retail gasoline prices had jumped by more than 84 cents versus year-earlier prices, according to the AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report. The pump price had risen to a nationwide average of $3.043 per gallon (regular grade), and as high as a $3.312 per gallon average on the west coast.
When ignorance of tire care is factored in, the rising fuel prices become even scarier.
"Running a tire 20 percent underinflated - only 5 to 7 pounds per square inch (psi) - can increase fuel consumption by 10 percent. That can easily cost motorists two or three miles per gallon. Not only that, but running underinflated also reduces the tire's tread life," said Bob Toth, Goodyear's general manager, auto tires.
If that's not enough, the Society of Automotive Engineers reports that 87 percent of all flat tires have a history of underinflation.
The U.S. Energy Department has reported that every pound per square inch of tire underinflation wastes 4 million gallons of gas daily in the U.S. At today's prices and with more vehicles on the road, that's a huge expense. An underinflated tire deflects more energy, increasing rolling resistance, which robs the vehicle of fuel efficiency.
Still, many motorists seem to simply ignore their tires. Survey information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that about one in every three cars has a significantly under inflated tire. According to the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA), 85 percent of drivers do not know how to properly check their tire pressure.

Used Cars: Allstate Threatens to Leave Auto Market, Degrade Service in CA, Unless Motoris
Allstate Threatens to Leave Auto Market, Degrade Service in CA, Unless Motorists Continue Paying Excessive Premiums
**News Conference/Public Hearing Monday AM**
Despite Staggering Profits, Allstate Continues to Battle Regulatory Requirement To Lower Its Auto Insurance Rates by $304.2 million ($150 per Car) Per Year
SANTA MONICA, Nov. 2 -- The following is being issued by the Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights:
In a Department of Insurance hearing beginning Monday, consumer advocates will argue that drivers with Allstate insurance policies deserve an 18.8% rate cut -- an average of $150 per car -- under new rules that limit excessive profits by the industry. Allstate Insurance Co. seeks five separate exemptions to the regulatory formula that determines auto insurance rates, including one claiming that the company will suffer deep financial hardship if it follows the rule, despite the company's already above-average profitability and shareholder return. FTCR has determined that Allstate is overcharging auto insurance consumers over $300 million per year.
In written testimony, Allstate issued a thinly veiled threat to regulators suggesting that a company forced to abide by rules limiting excessive profit might have fewer offices, reduce the quality of its claims processing, or even stop selling insurance in the state entirely.

Used Cars: Five Major Consumer Groups Endorse the National 'Motor Vehicle Owners'
Five Major Consumer Groups Endorse the National
'Motor Vehicle Owners' Right to Repair Act,' States CARE
ALEXANDRIA, Va., Oct. 29 -- "Thanks to America's five major consumer
organizations, which have dedicated their work to keeping consumers safer,
competition alive and the environment clean, 'The Motor Vehicle Owners' Right to
Repair Act' will have an additional boost for passage," stated David Parde,
president, The Coalition for Auto Repair Equality (CARE).
The letter of the consumer groups' endorsement, jointly signed by the
Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety; Center for Auto Safety; Consumers for
Auto Reliability and Safety; Consumer Federation of America; and Public Citizen,
have endorsed HR 2694, The Motor Vehicle Owners' Right to Repair Act, by stating
that, "the ability to quickly and easily repair computerized vehicle systems is
crucial for the safe operation of a vehicle.
"Under the bill, vehicle owners will also be able to choose, on cost and
reliability grounds, between competing repair facilities and aftermarket parts.
Consumer and independent service sector access to vehicle maintenance
information will in turn greatly enhance overall public safety and the
environmental effort to clean up our air," continued the joint statement.
Parde added to the consumers organizations' statement by stating that "'The
Right to Repair Act' is about the ability of motoring consumers to actually own
their vehicles' repair information, which should have been included with the
purchase of the vehicle. Vehicles that are now out of warranty should not be
forced back to the higher-priced car dealerships for repair work unless the
consumer chooses that venue."

Used Cars: Infiniti Receives 2008 Luxury Brand Residual Value Award From Automotive Lease G
Infiniti Receives 2008 Luxury Brand Residual Value Award From Automotive Lease Guide (ALG)
Infiniti G Coupe and Sedan Also Receives Top Residual Value Award
NASHVILLE, Tenn., Oct. 25 -- Automotive Lease Guide (ALG) has announced
that Infiniti has received its 2008 Luxury Brand Residual Value Award. In
addition, Infiniti won the Near Luxury Residual Value Award for its Infiniti G
Coupe and Sedan.
Now in is ninth year, the ALG Residual Value Awards honors vehicles and
automotive brands which are predicted to retain the highest percentage of their
original price after three years.
"Infiniti has substantially increased their residual values over the past
several years," said Jon Blair, CEO of ALG. "This is due to Infiniti's array of
sleek designs, strong powertrains, terrific interiors and easy-to-use
technologies. But, most of all, Infiniti offers all of this at very competitive
prices for a luxury brand."
Infiniti was also recognized by ALG for its "value pricing" philosophy, which
sets list prices at or near transaction pricing. This helps keep incentives low
and resale values high.
"By design, Infiniti's line of luxury automobiles offer a strong blend of
performance, style and value," said Mark Igo, vice president and general manager
of Infiniti. "It's gratifying to see our efforts are not only being recognized
by consumers through increased market share in both the new and used markets,
but by recognitions such as the awards we've received from ALG."
Within specific vehicle categories, the Infiniti QX placed third in the
luxury sport utility category, while the all-new Infiniti G Coupe and Sedan won
overall in the near luxury category.

Used Cars: Britax Announces Safety Recall
Britax Announces Safety Recall
CHARLOTTE, N.C., Oct. 19 -- Britax Child Safety, Inc. announced today that it
is conducting a safety recall on the Marathon child restraint, model numbers
E9L06, E9W06, and E906. The recall includes production of the Marathon child
restraints from May 23, 2006 through July 28, 2006 and with a top tether lot
number of KGR 01 A.
Under certain cir*****stances, if a child exceeds 50 pounds and the vehicle
manufacturer allows use of the top tether above 50 pounds, upon vehicle impact,
the top tether hook may open and have the potential to release from the tether
anchor. In the event of a crash, the child may move forward further than allowed
under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213. To date, no injuries have been
reported or linked to this issue.
To address this issue, Britax will send all registered owners of the Marathon
child restraints manufactured between May 23, 2006 and July 28, 2006 a top
tether hook replacement. All Marathon child restraint owners should confirm
their Marathon is affected by verifying the model number, date of manufacturer
and top tether hook lot number of KGR 01 A.
If your child restraint is involved in this safety notice, the top tether
should not be used with children weighing over 50 pounds until the top tether
hook replacement has been installed. Upon completion of the repair, the Marathon
child restraint can be used with the top tether until the child reaches 65
pounds or until the recommended weight allowed by the vehicle manufacturer for
top tether use.

Used Cars: J.D. Power and Associates Reports: More than 30 Percent of Auto Insurance Shop
J.D. Power and Associates Reports: More than 30 Percent of Auto Insurance Shoppers Switch Providers
Each 1 Percent of Shoppers that Switch Carriers Produces More than $100 Million in Annual Premiums
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., June 26 -- The average auto insurance customer gathers three competitive quotes while shopping for a new provider, and while the majority of insured shoppers remain with their current carrier, 33 percent will switch, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Insurance Shopping Study(SM) released today.
The study finds that while 33 percent of consumers who shop because of price ultimately switch, nearly 75 percent of consumers who shop because they have experienced poor customer service switch carriers.
"This suggests that when a customer becomes dissatisfied with their in*****bent carrier, they are more motivated to shop and switch," said Jeremy Bowler, senior director of the insurance practice at J.D. Power and Associates. "In contrast, while many shop to verify they are getting a competitive price, this group is less likely to switch insurers."
