Car Racing: Global Tuner Grand Prix and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to Put World's Top Pe
Global Tuner Grand Prix and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to Put World's Top Performance Tuners and Racers in Head-to-Head Battle
MONTEREY, Calif., Aug. 11 -- The Global Tuner Grand Prix is proud to announce that Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is hosting the first ever Global Tuner Grand Prix, taking place Friday, October 22nd through Sunday, October 24th, 2010.
The Global Tuner Grand Prix is a spectator event with top professional performance tuners from around the world competing at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The GTGP is similar to Europe's Tuner GP and Japan's International Lap Battle competitions but is the first of its kind in North America. This specific weekend is one of four no sound restriction Pro weekends at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
"On behalf of NOVITEC ROSSO we are excited to be part of the GTGP at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The GTGP format has been long overdue in North America and it's the perfect event to showcase NOVITEC ROSSO's technology on track in front of enthusiasts. There is no better way to prove a vehicles performance than on a racing circuit and with GTGP we will be able to do so against the best Tuners in the world," said Albert Cook, Director of NOVITEC North America, LLC.
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is the only track in North America where lap times for production cars are recognized by major manufacturers and motorsport media moguls around the world. A lap time here is used as a measuring stick for a vehicle's performance, equivalent to the Nurburgring in Germany.
"What a great way to end our major event season, bringing our fans the best in global tuner competition," said Gill Campbell, CEO/general manager for Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. "To put Porsche, Corvette and Mazda together in competition will be a true global motorsports event."
"Porsche Motorsport North America is very pleased to be a part of the 2010 GTGP event and to be able to attend with Technical and Parts Support as we do for all major racing events in the US. We look forward to an exciting three days of racing at one of the premier tracks in the country," said Paul Ritchie, President & CEO of Porsche Motorsport North America.

Car Racing: Nineteen Year Old Racing Sensation Dion von Moltke Roars Into Miami For Grand
Nineteen Year Old Racing Sensation Dion von Moltke Roars Into Miami For Grand Prix of Miami
Will be Driving Car #77 Dallara Daytona Prototype Sponsored By McDonalds/South African Airways/P1 Groupe
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla., March 5 -- Nineteen year old racing sensation, Dion von Moltke, is roaring into Miami for the Grand Prix of Miami, March 5-6, 2010 at the Homestead Miami Speedway. As the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series returns to Miami, all eyes will be on Dion as he returns to Doran Racing, driving with Memo Gidley. Dion will be driving the car #77, a Ford-powered Dallara Daytona Prototype that is being sponsored by McDonalds/South African Airways/P1 Groupe. This is a homecoming in many ways for Dion as Doran Racing gave him his Daytona Prototype start, and he currently lives in Miami attending college fulltime at Florida International University (FIU). P1 Groupe also provides driver management services for Dion, from sponsorships to marketing.
"I am really looking forward to returning to the team that gave me my debut in Daytona Prototypes, with the McDonalds South African Airways Doran Racing #77," said Dion von Moltke. "I really can't wait to kick things off at Homestead as it is my home race, and will have an even more fan support here pushing me on. Since Daytona I have never trained harder for a race. I am really looking forward to working with Memo and getting Doran Racing back to where it belongs, running up front!"
"South African Airways has been thrilled to be a part of Dion's quest to conquer Grand Am Racing," said Marc Cavaliere, Executive Vice President of North America for South African Airways. "As South Africa's national carrier, we take particular pride in supporting South Africans abroad, as they serve as ambassadors of our culture. Through Dion's hard work and dedication, he makes us proud to be South African. We look forward to seeing him race at Homestead."
Driving under the South African flag, Dion was born in Texas, and lived in Sydney and Los Angeles before moving to his current home in Coral Gables, Florida. Following a racing career with multiple championships in karting and open wheel racing, Dion competed in 2009 in both the Continental Tire Challenge Series and Rolex Sports Car Series. In seven rounds of the Continental Tire Challenge Series, he managed 3 wins and helped his co-driver, Mike Sweeney, to a top-10 in the season Driver Points Championship while turning many heads in the Rolex Series in both GT and DP classes. His goal is to conquer the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series in 2010. His story is even more remarkable as he balances professional racing with a full course load of studies at FIU, whilst also trying to spend as much time as he can manage in his beloved South Africa.

Car Racing: Craftsman and NASCAR(R) Announce Newest NASCAR(R) Award
Craftsman and NASCAR(R) Announce Newest NASCAR(R) Award
NASCAR(R) Craftsman Wrenchman Award Honors Crew Members from Each Series
CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 14 -- Craftsman, the Official Tools of NASCAR(R), and NASCAR today announced the newest NASCAR(R) season-ending award -- the Craftsman Wrenchman Award, to recognize a team member from each of the three national NASCAR(R) Touring Series who best showcases core Craftsman attributes of Trust, Quality, Knowledge and Innovation when performing their job with the race team.
The Craftsman Wrenchman Award is open to all crew members, whether they work at the track or race shop. Teams will nominate one team member with a selection committee choosing the finalists. A fan voting will decide the winner on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series side, while the selection committee will choose the winners from the NASCAR(R) Nationwide and NASCAR(R) Camping World Truck series.
The accomplishments and profiles of each of the 12 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series finalists, showcasing how they embody the core Craftsman attributes of Trust, Quality, Knowledge and Innovation, will be featured on craftsman.com, giving fans a unique opportunity to get a glimpse behind-the-scenes at what it takes to field a NASCAR(R) team and vote for their favorites. In addition, one lucky fan will win a trip to NASCAR(R) Champions Week in Las Vegas to make the presentation to the winning crew member. Overall, the program is expected to award approximately $170,000 in cash and Craftsman tools to the winners.
"The NASCAR(R) Craftsman Wrenchman Award will celebrate and reward the everyday heroes of NASCAR(R) who exemplify the attributes of the Craftsman brand both in the garage and at home," said Matt McDonnell, manager of brand development Craftsman. "It's also the perfect opportunity to establish a personal connection for the fans with important crew members who typically don't get to step into the spotlight."
Crew member nominations by participating NASCAR(R) Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Truck series teams will take place this summer. A selection committee will narrow the NSCS finalists in August. Fan voting will commence in the fall, leading up to the announcement of the Craftsman Wrenchman Award winners on Nov. 22 at Ford Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The Craftsman Wrenchman Award will be presented in early December at the NASCAR(R) Sprint Cup Series Awards Banquet during NASCAR(R) Champions Week in Las Vegas.

Car Racing: Matt Kenseth's Early Success Means Two Ford Fans Are Headed to Ford Champ
Matt Kenseth's Early Success Means Two Ford Fans Are Headed to Ford Championship Weekend
DEARBORN, Mich., March 6 -- Ford's NASCAR teams are racing. And that means race fans are already winning.
Matt Kenseth's record-tying start to the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season has resulted in two fans already winning trips to this year's Ford Championship Weekend and earning a chance to win a 2010 Ford Fusion as part of Ford's "We Race. You Win." national sweepstakes.
Kenseth's back-to-back victories in the Daytona 500 and Auto Club 500 in February led Chuck Fountain of Plymouth, Minn., and Edward Dudley-Robey of Bakersfield, Calif., to become the first fans to win an all-expenses paid trip to Ford Championship Weekend, and qualify to win that 2010 Ford Fusion.
Kenseth is the first driver to win the first two races of a season in 12 years.
Each time a Ford Racing driver wins a NASCAR Sprint Cup points race in 2009, one lucky fan and a guest will win an all-expenses paid VIP trip to Ford Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway from Nov. 20-22, 2009. During the race weekend, one of those fans will be selected as the grand prizewinner of a 2010 Ford Fusion.
When Fountain was notified that he had been selected as a winner, he was caught off-guard. "I said, 'What?' I guess I had forgotten that I had even entered the contest. It's just one of those things. If something is brought to my attention and it looks enticing, like this contest certainly is, then I'll throw my hat into the ring."
Additionally, as a bonus resulting from one of his February wins, Kenseth will visit Fountain in Minnesota for a private 2010 Fusion test drive. Coincidentally, when he entered the contest, Fountain named Kenseth as his favorite driver, but he respects anyone who races.
"I admire them all," Fountain said. "They call it a sport, but I think it's more of an endurance than anything else, having to put up with the heat and the jolting that they get when they get driving that distance and at those speeds. It's just absolutely amazing."
When Fountain gets to Homestead-Miami Speedway in eight months, it will be the first time he's ever seen a race in person - but the second time he's been to a NASCAR race track.
"The only track I've been to is the one at Daytona," Fountain said. "I've not seen a race there, but I've walked part of the track and took the van ride around it, and those banks are just unbelievable. You can hardly walk around one of those corners, to say nothing of trying to drive it at just shy of 200 miles an hour.
"It's just absolutely amazing. And now I can't wait to see Homestead."
"With our new Fusion getting ready to make its debut in showrooms, and our new NASCAR Fusion debuting on the track this season, we wanted to do something special for race fans that will reward them every time one of our drivers wins," Greg Scott, Ford Fusion marketing manager, said. "We're thrilled that Matt was able to win the first two races of the year - including the Daytona 500.
"Those victories have helped Ford get off to a great start, and have given two lucky fans a chance to experience a once-in-a-lifetime trip later this year. The great thing is, that fans have plenty more chances to get into this contest since it's still so early in the season."

Cars: Audi to Advertise During Super Bowl XLIII Broadcast
Audi to Advertise During Super Bowl XLIII Broadcast
- 60-second spot to air in the first quarter of the game
- Last year's ad drove record traffic to Audi's website
- Audi's market share has increased over two percentage points in just 12 months
HERNDON, Va., Dec. 10 -- After tremendous consumer and critical reaction to its "The Godfather"-inspired ad in Super Bowl XLII, Audi of America today announced it has purchased a 60-second slot to advertise in the first quarter of Super Bowl XLIII.
Last year's Super Bowl ad was the first in nearly 20 years for the company. The spot's unique creative elements scored big points with viewers. According to Collective Intellect and Nielsen Buzz Metrics, Audi was the number two Super Bowl advertiser in total buzz after the game.
"Last year's Super Bowl ad put old luxury on notice that Audi was setting the new standard in the American luxury market," said Scott Keogh, chief marketing officer, Audi of America. "With this spot, we plan to build on the success we've enjoyed in 2008 to make 2009 a year of progress and market momentum for the Audi brand."
Audi experienced a record year for sales in 2007. In 2008, despite the worst sales climate in nearly 25 years, Audi has increased market share against other imported luxury brands to 8.6%, up from 6.2% just 12 months ago.
Audi's advertising agency, San Francisco-based Venables Bell & Partners, created the ad.

Cars: Polls and the U.S. Auto Industry
Polls and the U.S. Auto Industry
WASHINGTON, Dec. 4 -- The intense debate underway about the future of the American auto industry has generated a lot of discussion about the public's attitudes.
"Right now, the American people are justifiably very concerned about the state of our economy and an overriding fear for their futures," said pollster Peter D. Hart. "Polls I conducted in mid-November showed deep concerns about the harmful impacts of the collapse of the U.S. auto industry," said Hart.
-- 90% fear the harm it would do to America's manufacturing sector.
-- 84% of Americans say it would harm the U.S. economy.
-- 70% fear the harm it would do to America's standing in the world.
-- 68% worry about the lack of consumer choice for America's car buyers.
Some pundits have been citing polls by CNN that indicate that a majority of Americans do not favor "a program that would provide them with several billion dollars in assistance." CNN does responsible and good polling. However, the question which is being touted on the financial loan assistance for the auto industry is not a good evaluation of public opinion or public sentiments.
Their question reads as follows: "QUESTION: The major U.S. auto companies have asked the government for a program that would provide them with several billion dollars in assistance. The auto companies say they may go into bankruptcy without that assistance. Based on what you have read or heard, do you favor or oppose this program?"
The basic flaw with the question is that the respondent must know the program. They don't, so it is difficult to assume these respondents voicing an opinion are really talking about the legislation or program the congress is voting on.
There is a much more significant finding in this same CNN survey which has not been highly noted nor much discussed. Fully, 15% of the American public -- or roughly 18 million households -- tell the CNN pollsters that the auto industry going out of business "would immediately affect their families. Additionally, 77% of Americans say that auto bankruptcy would affect them and their families, if not now, sometime in the future it would affect them immediately."
"This means that one out of six households would have a 'goodbye and good luck' sign put on their house. That is 18 million households directly affected. This would be the same as having a dozen Katrinas hit from coast to coast," said Hart.
Peter Hart stated: "The bottom line is pretty simple -- the American public does not want the housing industry to fail, the banks to fail, and they certainly do not want the auto industry to fail. This survey has merit, but the figure that counts most is the one that tells us that 3 in 4 Americans say they will be affected and 18 million American households will be affected immediately."

Cars: Verizon Makes Its California Fleet Greener by Adding 16 Hybrid Vehicles
Verizon Makes Its California Fleet Greener by Adding 16 Hybrid Vehicles
New Vehicles, Part of 100 More Hybrid Sedans Being Added Across Seven States and Washington, D.C., Help Verizon Cut Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Save Fuel
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., Nov. 13 -- Verizon is rolling out 16 additional hybrid sedans to help conserve fuel and reduce the emission of greenhouse gases in Southern California.
The new vehicles are among the 100 hybrid sedans Verizon is adding to its motor vehicle fleet in seven states and Washington, D.C., replacing gasoline-powered sedans. The new hybrid sedans are in addition to 100 hybrids, including 10 in California, that the company began adding to its fleet at the end of 2007. By doubling the number of hybrids to 200, Verizon expects to conserve an additional 16,000 gallons of fuel and cut greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 1.4 metric tons per vehicle annually.
Verizon's new Toyota Prius hybrid sedans, compared with most conventionally powered sedans, can travel nearly twice the miles per gallon and emit less than half of the carbon. This supports the company's goal of continuing to reduce CO2 emissions.
"Minimizing the impact of our operations by conserving energy, increasing our recycling rates and finding practical as well as innovative solutions to environmental challenges are a part of how we operate our business," said Tim McCallion, Verizon's West region president. "As a broadband company, Verizon makes it possible for e-commerce to flourish and for our customers to telecommute or engage in distance learning; so we understand the important role technology must play in reducing the environmental impact of our operations."
In addition to the hybrid sedans, the company has been using 13 specially designed hybrid service-vans in Maryland and Texas since 2007. A company that specializes in hybrid-power systems retrofitted the new vehicles to Verizon's specifications since no domestic motor vehicle manufacturer currently makes vans powered by gasoline-electric engines.
In 2007, Verizon also powered down or removed obsolete equipment from more than 400 buildings, and collected 1.1 million cellular phones for refurbishing, donation and recycling. So far in 2008, Verizon has electronically delivered about 75 million bills to customers.
Over the last five years, Verizon's energy conservation, waste prevention and recycling efforts have yielded an estimated average reduction of 332,295 metric tons in greenhouse-gas emissions. That's equivalent to nearly 61,000 cars not driven for one year.
