Motorcycle: Liberty Tire Recycling Breaks Ground as NASCAR 'Green' Sponsor
Liberty Tire Recycling Breaks Ground as NASCAR 'Green' Sponsor
- MAKE Motorsports' #50 Liberty Tire Recycling Chevy Silverado Driven by T.J. Bell -
PITTSBURGH, Aug. 17 -- Pittsburgh-based Liberty Tire Recycling, the premier provider of tire recycling services in the United States, is now the official sponsor of the MAKE Motorsports' #50 Liberty Tire Recycling Chevy Silverado, which is operated by veteran driver T.J. Bell in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Liberty Tire is the official tire recycler of the race team -- the first such sponsorship in NASCAR's "green" category.
"Our partnership with MAKE Motorsports is a natural progression as we try to reach more and more people with our core message of sustainability and performance," said Jeffrey Kendall, CEO of Liberty Tire Recycling. "Scrap tires provide a consistent supply of raw material for innovative products, including rubberized asphalt, tire-derived fuel and recycled rubber mulch. These products are not only sustainable, but perform better than the conventional alternatives."
Liberty Tire is the premier provider of tire recycling services in North America, reclaiming more than 1.5 billion pounds of rubber each year for innovative, eco-friendly products. The recycled rubber produced by Liberty Tire is used as crumb rubber and industrial feedstock for molded products and rubberized asphalt; as tire-derived fuel for industrial kilns, mills and power plants; and as rubber mulch for landscaping and playground safety surfacing. The company maintains a network of processing plants and comprehensive door-to-door collection services.
MAKE Motorsports was founded by Mark Beaver and Tracy Lowe, a partnership with 50 years of combined racing experience. Beaver has owned teams as part of the NHRA, IHRA, Super Late Model Dirt Series, Legends, SCCA Trans Am & SCCA World Challenge. As one of the only female team owners in racing, Lowe has owned or competed in Dirt Late Models and SCCA. The pair is committed to enhancing the sport with quality-prepared vehicles, an experienced crew, and sound business practices. MAKE Motorsports is the first NCWTS team to be operated out of historic Shelby, N.C. in the last 15 years.
"Our team is built on family, our word and our sustainability in the sport of stock car racing," Lowe said. "As a mom, I like to do whatever I can to help give my children a better planet someday. Teaming with Liberty Tire Recycling is perfect -- spreading that message of sustainability through our daily working lives in NASCAR. Who would have thought? I can't wait to see what the true impact will be in the sport."

Motorcycle: Nissan Displays Six-Pack of Significant Z® Cars at Rolex Monterey Moto
Nissan Displays Six-Pack of Significant Z® Cars at Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion
- Nissan Celebrates 40th Anniversary of Original Datsun 240Z and Long Racing History -
FRANKLIN, Tenn., Aug. 10 -- Nissan North America, Inc. today announced that it will continue its year-long celebration of the 40th anniversary of the icon Nissan Z® with a display of historic Z® racers at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, August 12 - 15 at Laguna Seca Raceway, Monterey, Calif.
Four of the six Z®s appearing at the event, formerly known as the Monterey Historic Automobile Races, have significant racing histories - including SCCA National Championships, IMSA Manufacturers' and Drivers' Championship and victories at LeMans, Daytona and Sebring. Among the well-known drivers who have piloted these vehicles are John Morton, Bob Sharp, Elliott Forbes-Robinson, Sam Posey, Paul Newman and Steve Millen. The other two vehicles are a production 40th Anniversary Nissan 370Z and a specially prepared Brock Racing Enterprises 370Z tribute car.
In addition to the display vehicles, a number of vintage Nissan race cars have been entered in competition. John Morton will drive the #46 1970 Datsun 510 in the "1966 - 1972 Trans Am under 2 Liter Cars" class and a pair of 1985 Nissan GTPs (#83 and #84) owned by Toluca Lake Classic Motorsports will compete in the "1981 - 1989 FIA Mfg Championship & IMSA GTP" class.
Following are brief descriptions and histories of the Nissan display vehicles:
Brock Racing Enterprises Datsun 240Z
In 1970, when the Datsun 240Z arrived in the U.S., Peter Brock's Southern California-based Brock Racing Enterprises (BRE) racing team helped to change the motorsports world by claiming the first SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) C Production National Championship for the Z over long-established champions from Germany and England.
Datsun 240Zs swept the top 3 spots with Bob Sharp in second and John McComb in third, in another BRE car, to firmly establish the Z® as a force in SCCA C Production racing. Datsun Z®s went on to win 10 straight SCCA C Production National Championships.
The 1970 and 1971 championship car, chassis #492, carried the now famous red, white and blue BRE livery penned by Peter Brock. Unfortunately chassis #492 was destroyed in a racing accident in the 1970s. This vehicle is a faithful replica of that car created by Ron Carter. It carries the BRE front and rear spoilers as well as the aerodynamic headlight covers. Under the hood is a BRE-built 2.4-liter inline-6 cylinder engine with the original triple Solex/Mikuni carburetors and the Nissan Competition intake manifold. Even the wheels are the original American LeMans magnesium pieces, so it is very close to the BRE 240Z that John Morton and the BRE team used to rock the racing world in 1970.
Bob Sharp Racing Datsun 240Z Chassis #00006
This car is the first Datsun 240Z imported into the U.S. It was the original display vehicle at the 1969 New York Auto Show. It later went to the Toronto Auto Show and was damaged when a spokesmodel sat on the roof for a photographer. The car was quickly pulled from the publicity tour and became the first race winning 240Z under the Bob Sharp Racing banner. This car appeared at every SCCA Runoffs from 1970 to 1978. Bob Sharp and the Z® won the SCCA C Production National Championship in 1972, 1973 and 1975. This car was raced as a 240Z, 260Z and 280Z. After its days at Bob Sharp Racing, it was owned and raced for many years by Jim Fitzgerald who had also raced it for Bob Sharp Racing.
When the car was a show car it was originally dark green and a patch of dark green paint was found during the restoration and has been maintained on the car to confirm its beginnings as the infamous "spokesmodel" car. It is owned by Dr. Allan Robbins and was restored by SharpSight Motorsports.
Bob Sharp Racing Datsun 240Z IMSA GTU
This car started its long racing career as a 1970 240Z prepped by Bob Sharp Racing (BSR) in Wilton, Connecticut. It was the second 240Z BSR used to compete in C Production in the SCCA after chassis #006. Bob Sharp won the SCCA C Production National Championship in 1972, 1973 and 1975. Bob Sharp also won the IMSA GTU Championship in 1975.
This car became a backup C Production car for Bob Sharp Racing when new race cars were created for the 1976 season. The new IMSA GTU car was destroyed in Sharp's crash at Road Atlanta in April 1976. This car was pulled from backup C Production duty and quickly converted to IMSA GTU specs so Sharp could make the next race at Laguna Seca. He finished 2nd at Laguna Seca and won the next week at Ontario. Unfortunately, Sharp crashed again three weeks later at Lime Rock Park, ending his illustrious driving career.
A variety of drivers drove this car after Sharp's retirement including Elliott Forbes Robinson, Sam Posey and Paul Newman. In 1978 this car held the all-time IMSA GTU lap records at Brainerd, Daytona, Hallett, Lime Rock, Mid America, Mid Ohio, Pocono, Sears Point, Road Atlanta and Talladega. The car is owned by Dr. Allan Robbins and was restored by SharpSight Motorsports.
Nissan Motorsports 300ZX
Nissan competed with the 300ZX in IMSA GTO and then GTS from 1989 to 1995, winning 19 races during that time. Steve Millen won the Driver's Championship with the 300ZX in 1992 and 1994. Nissan also won the Manufacturer's Championship in 1992 and 1994. In 1994 the Nissan Motorsports 300ZX took the overall win at the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring as well as 1st in class and 5th overall at the 24 Hours of LeMans. This car, Chassis #7 (the Sebring and LeMans winner), is owned by Millen.
After dominating the competition in 1994, IMSA banned the 300ZX's twin turbo V6 engine. The 300ZXs raced in 1995 with a V8 engine, but they were never quite the same. Millen suffered career-ending injuries in a crash at Road Atlanta and the cars were retired at the end of the season.

Motorcycle: Zero Agni Team Wins First Ever North American Electric Superbike Race
Zero Agni Team Wins First Ever North American Electric Superbike Race
- Zero Motorcycles / Agni Motors Team Makes History at TTXGP -
SANTA CRUZ, Calif., May 19 -- Team Zero Agni took home top honors at the inaugural TTXGP and goes down in history as the first winner of a fully electric motorcycle championship series road race held in North America. The 11-lap duel took place last Sunday at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California, with accomplished AMA racer Shawn Higbee emerging victorious on his Zero/Agni prepared motorcycle. As the weekend progressed, Higbee dominated the field to qualify for the pole position and held off an intense battle brought on by second-place finisher Michael Barnes. The stealthy competitors maintained a consistent pace that was only 18 seconds off the lap times of the AMA Superbikes, which proved to be an impressive showing for the all-electric motorcycles in their first outing.
"I think this could turn into something big. It's going to introduce a whole new industry to motorcycling," Higbee said. "The engineers at Zero Motorcycles and Agni Motors are a whole new breed. I'm surprised at how close we are to gas bikes already. The lack of vibration is a new experience and the bike is very agile, you just glide along."
"Shawn rode a great race, the motorcycle performed perfectly and the duel on the track made an already exciting race even more fun to watch," said Gene Banman, CEO of Zero Motorcycles. "The effort that our team put into this race resulted in a fantastic demonstration of electric motorcycle performance. At the same time, Zero is using this as an opportunity to test the new designs and technology that will drive the next evolution of Zero's production motorcycles."
Zero Motorcycles and Agni Motors are no strangers to competition. In 2009, Zero Motorcycles held "The 24 Hours of Electricross" which became the world's first all-electric 24-hour off-road race. Also in 2009, Agni Motors produced a convincing win in the PRO Class at the inaugural TTXGP at the Isle of Man during the world's first zero-carbon race. This year, Zero Motorcycles claimed first place in the final heat of a European off-road race and third overall amongst a field of 250 gas motorcycles. Based on the success that Agni's motors have displayed on the racetrack, Zero Motorcycles incorporated a race-proven Agni motor into the powertrains of the 2010 Zero S and Zero DS production models.

Motorcycle: Ducati Multistrada 1200 and Falcon Motorcycles' Kestrel to Be Unveiled at
Ducati Multistrada 1200 and Falcon Motorcycles' Kestrel to Be Unveiled at Second Quail Motorcycle Gathering
Two of the World's Most Anticipated Motorbikes Will Make Their Debut on May 8, 2010 at Quail Lodge Golf Club in Carmel, Calif.
CARMEL, Calif., April 20-- The Quail Motorcycle Gathering today announced that the technologically-advanced four-in-one Ducati Multistrada 1200 and the custom Kestrel Falcon will be unveiled at the Quail Motorcycle Gathering on Saturday, May 8 to be held at Quail Lodge Golf Club in Carmel, Calif.
"We are honored that Ducati and Falcon Motorcycles, the most distinguished companies in the industry, have chosen to debut their newest masterpieces at The Quail," said Courtney Porras, Director of Special Events for Quail Lodge Golf Club. "Our guests will be among the first to have the unmatched opportunity to compare the aesthetics and engineering of these rare bikes."
Ducati will be debuting its first production spec of the Ducati Multistrada 1200, the most technologically advanced motorcycle on the market. The Multistrada has the ability to change from Sport, Touring, Urban and Enduro to accommodate every rider's needs via four pre-set programs. The groundbreaking bike combines innovative design, customized suspension and traction control with a 150 hp Testastretta 11 degree engine.
Equally impressive, Falcon Motorcycles, acclaimed for their meticulous custom creations, will introduce its follow up to the "Bullet Falcon", The Kestrel, created around a 1970 Triumph Bonneville engine that Falcon's Ian Barry cut in half and re-engineered. The one-of-a-kind motorcycle underwent more than 2,000 hours of radical design and fabrication work. Except for 10 inches of the original Triumph frame-neck, the entire frame, front forks, gas and oil tanks, exhausts, handlebars, levers - in fact every part of the motorcycle including the cylinders, were made 100 percent from scratch, in-house at the Falcon Motorcycles Los Angeles workshop. The Kestrel is the second creation in Falcon's Concept Ten, a collection of very different one-off bikes designed and fabricated around the engines of rare pre and post-war British motorcycles. The first is the acclaimed "Bullet Falcon," which has come to be recognized as one of the most iconic two-wheelers in recent motorcycle history.
Additional key motorcycles on display, amongst many others include a 1974 Ducati 750 SS, the last new bike of its kind sold in the United States; 1949 Vincent Black Lighting, one of only 30 motorcycles ever built and a 1937 Harley-Davidson 61ci Overhead valve V-Twin, also known as the "Knucklehead," one of the most handsome and readily recognizable motorcycles of all time. The Quail has also added a 1975-1977 Honda GL 1000 feature display.
Other highlights include the all new Honda VFR1200F, featuring the world's first dual clutch transmission; Ducati test-rides; an Adam Wright photography exhibit; therapeutic chair massages; live entertainment and a delicious Southern flavor barbeque lunch highlighting The Monterey Peninsula region's best local ingredients. Attendees will have access to the Bonhams & Butterfields' auction of rare motorcycles and memorabilia which includes a beautifully restored 1957 Mondial 125cc Grand Prix dohc 'Dustbin', a rare 1910 Royal Pioneer 30.50ci Single, and a collection of four Vincent Prototypes built for Vincent's reincarnation.
To kick-off The Quail Motorcycle Gathering, enthusiasts are invited to participate in a one-day Motorcycle Tour on Friday, May 7, 2010. The scenic tour, limited to 50 participants, will wind through 100 miles of the Monterey Peninsula coastline, and will finish the day with an exclusive dinner. The cost to participate is $250 per person, which will include a gift bag, lunch, track time at the legendary Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (where you can experience the "corkscrew" first hand,) and entrance into the evening reception, featuring special guest speakers and a preview of the Bonhams & Butterfields Auction Motorcycles.

Motorcycle: Motorcycles With Antilock Brakes Have Fewer Fatal Crashes and Lower Insurance
Motorcycles With Antilock Brakes Have Fewer Fatal Crashes and Lower Insurance Losses Than Bikes Without Antilocks
ARLINGTON, Va., April 5 -- Antilock brakes for motorcycles significantly reduce crashes, removing some of the risk that comes with riding on 2 wheels. A new study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety indicates that motorcycles with antilocks versus without are 37 percent less likely to be in fatal crashes per 10,000 registered vehicle years. Bolstering this finding is a separate analysis by the affiliated Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) of insurance claims filed for damage to motorcycles. Bike models with antilocks have 22 percent fewer claims for damage per insured vehicle year (a vehicle year is 1 vehicle insured for 1 year, 2 insured for 6 months, etc.) than the same models without antilocks.
Crash avoidance technology like motorcycle antilocks is especially important because more people are taking up riding and more are dying in crashes. Rider deaths topped 5,000 in 2008 -- more than in any year since the federal government began collecting fatal crash data in 1975. Motorcycle registrations rose to 7.7 million in 2008, up from 4.3 million in 2000, according to R.L. Polk and Company data. The upswing in motorcyclist deaths comes amid record lows for fatalities in car crashes, prompting the Institute and HLDI to look harder at measures to stem motorcyclist deaths.
"It's a troubling trend," says Anne McCartt, Institute senior vice president for research. "No one wants to begrudge motorcyclists the opportunity to ride for fun or to get around town on a bike. As the number of new riders continues to increase, though, it's becoming more important than ever to lower the crash risk."
One answer might be to equip more motorcycles with antilocks. Stopping a motorcycle is trickier than stopping a car. For one thing, the front and rear wheels typically have separate brake controls. In an emergency, a rider faces a split-second choice to either brake hard, which can lock the wheels and cause an overturn, or hold back on braking and risk running into the emergency. This is when antilocks can help by reducing brake pressure when they detect impending lockup and then increasing the pressure again when traction is restored. Brake pressure is evaluated multiple times per second, so riders may brake fully without fear of locking up. Antilocks won't prevent every motorcycle crash. They won't help a rider about to be struck from behind, for example.
