Sports on Two Wheels
The Olympic motto, citius, altius, fortius, meaning faster, higher, stronger can equally be applied to competition aboard motorcycles.
Almost as long as bikes have been bnilt, people have been holding contests to see who could make them go quickest, last longest — even get to the top of the biggest hill.
Motorcycle competition does not have to be all about speed. The sport of trials, for example, produces champions as skilful as any on two wheels. Endurance often plays a part, whether in a 24-hour road-race or the three-week slog from Paris to Dakar. But mostly it's the thrill of high velocities that attracts riders and spectators to bike sport.
This is true wherever they are in the world, and on whatever surface they compete—from the steep, man-made banking at Daytona to the sand of the Baja desert; from frozen ice-race ovals to the unforgiving public roads of the Isle of Man.
