FXDB Sturgis, 1991
On the face of it, the "Mark II" Sturgis added little to the Low Rider family from which it sprang. Named after the annual North Dakota bike rally, the FXDB looked like little more than a midnight-black FXRS with modest changes to its rear shocks and oil tank. Indeed, the two models shared the same front end. The major attributes of the FXDB Sturgis were simplicity itself — just two hard-to-spot pieces of rubber — and with them, a motorcycle was transformed. The Sturgis was a limited-edition model —just over 1,500 were produced — but its impact lives on in every DynaGlide built since. The frame itself, an all-steel structure developed by advanced computer-aided design, is fabricated from a mixture of tubular and forged components with a large-diameter box-section backbone.
The engine isolation system differed from the existing Glide series and Low Rider mounts. These had used three location points with rubber-bonded bolts, rather than the two more sophisticated composite blocks of the Sturgis. The result was startling. The big twin's effective rev range had been limited by low-speed shudders at the bottom end and intrusive vibes at the top. With the Sturgis, that all changed. One could now happily ride at engine speeds where other Hogs would rattle. Softails have the highest overall gearing ol any model to reduce revs to comfortable vibration levels at cruising speeds. Fittingly, another Sturgis, the FXB, had been associated with two other momentous bits of rubber a decade earlier - the toothed rubber belts of its revolutionary primary and final drive.
