Car History: BorgWarner Indianapolis 500 Trophy To Appear in Victory Lane
BorgWarner Indianapolis 500 Trophy To Appear in Victory Lane
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., May 23 -- Long termed "the Greatest Spectacle in Racing," the Indianapolis 500 will once again thrill race fans the world over on May 27 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Making it to Victory Lane at the legendary Brickyard earns the winning driver a place not only in racing history but also at the base of the BorgWarner Indianapolis 500 Trophy.
The Trophy, which features the sterling silver visage of every Indy winner, made its inaugural appearance in Victory Lane in 1936. In 2004, a new base was constructed and attached to the Trophy to add capacity for future winners through 2034. Made of over 100 pounds of sterling silver and standing five feet, five inches tall, the Trophy originally cost $10,000 and is currently valued at $1.5 million.

Car History: Car History Year 2003
BACK TO THE FUTURE...
This is the most exciting part, hopefully.
What next? Will the current fashion for "retro" styling continue? Does the taste for cars that look like the cars that their designers thought were cool when they were kids, demonstrate and unhealthy inability to grow up and face up to current challenges like pollution and diminishing reserves of fossil fuels, and our dependency on states that might prove, any minute, not to be dependable?

Car History: Car History Year 2002
The Esperanto is produced by the Panoz
Auto Development Company, under the direction of millionaire race-car enthusiast Don Panoz, in Atlanta, Georgia. Don's dream was to create a true sports car in the European tradition, built by Americans, to be driven by Americans, using all-American components. At the heart of the Esperanto, therefore, are Ford Mustang components, sheathed in a sleek, hand-crafted, aluminum body of classic proportions. The Esperanto has none of the brashness and naked aggression of the Dodge Viper, but is, instead, elegant and understated. Don Panoz was adamant that his car should combine track level performance with family sedan practicality. The former was achieved by completing and competing the car prior to its sale to the public. The latter was assured by the use of proprietory Ford parts, including switch-gear and instruments. An Esperanto owner could visit his local Ford dealer and get parts and service - at Ford rates. This set-up was designed to appeal to prospective purchasers of such cars as the Porsche 911, Mercedes Benz SL Series and the Jaguar XK8. Giving a top speed in excess of 150 mph and a 0-60 time of five seconds, the Esperanto offers greater exclusivity, easier maintenance and, in all probability, greater reliability due to the lack of stress on its heavyweight mechanical components, than most of its competitors. The inimitable burble of a big V8 plus excellent rear-drive handling characteristics (the motor is effectively centrally mounted) should also prove appealing to the domestic driver and it is hoped to market the car in Europe in 2003.

Car History: Car History Year 2001
Stanley Kubrick's vision of 2001 saw
PanAm star cruisers waltzing around a permanent moon base. In the 'sixties, anything was possible... It is obvious that the future of the American automobile is going to be just as varied and interesting as its past. While it is impossible to predict exactly what will happen in the years ahead, there are some changes that are already in motion - even so, the full effect of these alterations can only be guessed at.

Car History: Car History Year 2000
The dawn of a New Millennium is an event that few people - in historical terms -will witness, for obvious reasons. It is one of those strange moments that serves to focus the mind and encourage us to take stock; to think about what has gone before and what may be to come. The future is always the great unknown and so we tend, at such times, to seek comfort in the past, to wax lyrical about that warm and wonderful, half-remembered, half-imagined, time-gone-by that probably never was. We yearn for an age when life was safer and simpler. For some reason, that golden Age is often imagined to be the nineteen-fifties.

Car History: Car History Year 1999
Improving the design of a highly successful or well-known model is never an easy task, and quite a few manufacturers over the years have been led astray by the ideas proposed by stylists. For the final year of the 20th century Pontiac seemed to have achieved a couple of hits, but at the same time there were also those cars that didn't quite make it to the major league. The good news was in the mid-year launch of the new-generation Grand Am. This was the model that had been Pontiac's volume leader since 1992, ranking in the top ten list of the most popular cars in the US and selling more than 200,000 units every year. And, for the previous five years, the Grand Am had led the compact sector for most retail registrations.

Car History: Car History Year 1998
There was a great deal of newsworthy activity in the auto industry, starting with the announcement in May that Daimler-Benz and Chrysler were to merge which stunned many industry observers. The amalgamation - estimated to be worth some $92 billion - was the world's largest ever industrial merger. Called Daimler-Chrysler, the new company was jointly led by Juergen Schrempp and Robert Eaton at first, but the merger was, in reality, a takeover. And when Eaton subsequently retired, control reverted to the Daimler hierarchy. With this tie-up, Daimler-Chrysler became the fifth largest auto-maker in the world.

Car History: Car History Year 1997
Oldsmobile celebrated its centenary in
'97 (the first American automobile manufacturer to do so) and thousands of vintage and classic Oldsmobile owners took their cars to Lansing, Michigan, to take part in the historic festivities in August. The week-long 100th birthday celebration was one of the largest automotive gatherings ever staged and, apart from all the cars, there was a whole host of commemorative merchandise on sale, plus a chance for a sneak look at some possible future models.

Car History: Car History Year 1996
Although Chrysler had been the leading player in the minivan market ever since it introduced the front-wheel-drive Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan in 1984, the opposition was getting stronger year by year as other manufacturers brought out their own versions of the multipurpose vehicle. In order to maintain their dominant position as the number one seller in this lucrative sector, the Chrysler team realized that they had to come up with something new for '96. The answer was revealed at the 1995 North American International Auto Show held in Detroit.

Car History: Car History Year 1995
Opinions about automotive styling are a very subjective matter, something that Buick acknowledged in their Press release for the new 1995 model Riviera. But perhaps not unnaturally the statement went on to say: "...we think you will find this car to be beautiful." Depending on your point of view, that might seem rather presumptuous, although there was no doubt that the Riviera certainly looked striking. Whether it will ever attain the status of a "modern classic" in the same manner as the 1963 Riviera remains to be seen.
