Motorcycle, Motorcycles, Motor Cycle Motorcycle: Allstate Installs Permanent Warning Signs to Promote Motorcycle Safety at Danger

Allstate Installs Permanent Warning Signs to Promote Motorcycle Safety at Dangerous Intersections
Program aims to standardize warning signs for motorcycle safety, targets dangerous intersections in more than 30 cities across the country this year

NORTHBROOK, Ill., May 1, 2012 -- In an effort to help standardize warning signs for motorcycle safety and help reduce the number of motorcycle crashes at intersections involving other vehicles, Allstate Insurance Company announced today plans to permanently install motorcycle warning signs in more than 30 U.S. cities this year. Currently, there is no standard sign for motorcycle awareness.

The yellow, diamond shaped warning sign was created following two years of development, which included 140 temporary installations in various U.S. cities between 2010 and 2011. The signs were designed to establish a standardized warning device that can be used by any local or state agency and would be recognizable to riders and motorists across the country. Simply reading, "Watch for Motorcycles," the sign was developed by Allstate as part of its "Once is Never Enough" (ONE) program – an awareness campaign that encourages people to look twice for motorcycles at intersections.

"Allstate set out to create a standardized warning sign to help increase motorcycle safety at dangerous intersections," said Keith Rutman, vice president of Allstate's Consumer Household unit. "As more and more of the 'Watch for Motorcycles' signs are installed across the country, we hope that riders and motorists will familiarize themselves with the message and remember to always look twice at intersections, because once is never enough."

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 46 percent of all multi-vehicle crashes occur at intersections, oftentimes as a result of a vehicle turning left, impeding the motorcyclist's right-of-way.

"Every day in the U.S., an average of three motorcyclists are killed at intersections in crashes that involve other vehicles, and that's unacceptable," Rutman said.

Through its ONE program, Allstate works with local traffic authorities to identify dangerous intersections for riders and then donates and installs warning signs at the determined locations to increase awareness of motorcycles.

To kick off National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month (May), the first permanent installation of the "Watch for Motorcycles" warning signs will take place today in Atlanta. Working closely with the Georgia Department of Transportation, Allstate is donating and installing the warning signs to help prevent motorcycle crashes at dangerous intersections in the future. Additional signs will be installed in other cities across the country throughout the year.

Allstate is also encouraging people throughout the month of May to take the ONE Pledge – committing to look twice for motorcycles at intersections – and share with at least ONE other person to spread the message. For every pledge shared, Allstate will donate ONE dollar toward the creation and installation of more "Watch for Motorcycles" signs at dangerous intersections across the country.

American comedian and actor Bill Engvall will also join Allstate in its quest to protect riders and help spread a motorcycle awareness message. Best known for his work as a member of the Blue Collar Comedy group, Engvall has partnered with Allstate after experiencing firsthand how important motorcycle awareness is for all drivers.

"As a person who's had someone very close to me involved in a serious motorcycle crash and as a rider myself, I jumped at the chance to work with Allstate on this important campaign," said Bill Engvall. "I've made a living making jokes about signs of the obvious, but here's one sign that carries a vital message and is no laughing matter."

Now in its fourth year, Allstate's ONE program has evolved from general motorcycle awareness education, to installing temporary warning signs at dangerous intersections in more than 30 cities over the past two years, to the permanent installations of the new warning signs promoting motorcycle safety.

Allstate will continue to work with local departments of transportation across the country to identify dangerous intersections and donate and install additional signs in the future.

Motorcycle, Motorcycles, Motor Cycle Motorcycle: Admiral Reveals Car Crime Creating a Nervy Nation

Admiral Reveals Car Crime Creating a Nervy Nation

    CARDIFF, Wales, January 6, 2012 --

Britain's motorists are living in fear of having their car stolen or broken into according to a new poll, even though car crime numbers have fallen over the years.

Car insurance specialist Admiral commissioned YouGov to survey 2,500 drivers as part of the annual Admiral Survey of British Motorists, and found almost three quarters (74%) worry about their car being stolen or broken into. Drivers in the East Midlands, and Yorkshire are most concerned with 80% in those regions worrying about their car being stolen or broken into, whilst motorists in Scotland have the most relaxed stance with 63% worrying about it.

However, it appears this anxiety about car crime is unfounded as Admiral's own claims statistics show that the number of cars being stolen or broken into has dropped dramatically over the past decade. In fact, in 2011 0.16% of motorists insured by Admiral had their car stolen compared to 0.54% in 2001. Car break ins show a similar pattern, as ten years ago 0.61% of motorists insured by Admiral had their car broken into compared to 0.16% in 2011.

Dave Halliday, Admiral managing director, said: "Our statistics show that car crime has been falling for several years now, so maybe worrying about it is undue. This anxiety could be linked to a general sense of unease about the state of the country and the economy in particular; our cars are after all, one of the most valuable things we own."

Dave continued: "Modern cars have excellent security features with manufacturers making them more and more difficult to steal, which must have some impact on the number stolen or broken into. However, motorists should always make sure their car isn't an easy target for thieves by parking it in a well-lit area, not leaving items on show, and making sure their keys are kept in a safe and secure place should someone gain access to their home."

Even though car crime is decreasing, Admiral thought it would be interesting to see which types of vehicle are the most likely to be targeted by criminals*. It looked at statistics from the last year and found the Nissan Sunny, BMW X6 and Audi RS6 were the three cars most likely to be stolen. The Nissan Figaro is the car most likely to be broken into followed by the Citroen C8 and BMW 730.

Motorcycle, Motorcycles, Motor Cycle Motorcycle: Scott Tucker, Level 5 Win Petit Le Mans, ALMS Championship

Scott Tucker, Level 5 Win Petit Le Mans, ALMS Championship

BRASELTON, Ga., Oct. 2, 2011 -- Level 5 Motorsports ended the 2011 American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patron season on the top step of the podium, as drivers Scott Tucker, Christophe Bouchut and Joao Barbosa scored a dominant victory in the 14th annual Petit Le Mans powered by Mazda.

Piloting one of the team's two Microsoft Office 2010-sponsored HPD ARX-01g's, both making their debuts in one of the world's toughest endurance races, Tucker, Bouchut and Barbosa stuck to their plan of bringing the new LMP2 car home in one piece. It ended with an impressive sixth place finish overall and class victory after a flawless run in the 1,000-mile marathon.

"The competition was real tough today and we knew this was going to be a real big battle for us," said Tucker. "We still have a lot of work to do on the car but we did a great job with it. Joao and Christophe drove a great race. We didn't miss a beat. With the car being just three weeks old and having gone through a six-hour race and now a 1,000-mile race as well with no problems, we're real fortunate with that."

Having started from third position on the grid, four-time national driving champion Tucker put the No. 33 car in an early lead, battling with the Signatech ORECA Nissan throughout his solid opening double-stint. The two teams, locked in the fight for the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup, enjoyed a spirited fight until the Nissan struck mechanical problems in the fifth hour.

With Bouchut and Barbosa putting in consistent stints, most importantly staying out of trouble around the treacherous 2.54-mile Road Atlanta road course, the final four and a half hours proved to be clear sailing for the Level 5 team, which took the class victory by a hefty eight lap margin.

"We knew coming into this weekend that traffic was going to play a key role," Barbosa said. "We were lucky enough to have a big enough lead that we could manage traffic with enough care. It was about staying out of trouble and that's when we went to the lead and just took our time. We didn't make any mistakes and also didn't take any risks. The car performed perfectly for the entire race. We're really pleased about that."

With its first HPD ARX-01g having only turned its first wheel less than three weeks ago at Laguna Seca, ending the ALMS season with back-to-back victories, as well as becoming a repeat Petit Le Mans winner, came as a huge reward for Level 5, which also scored the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup victory on Saturday.

"In the past, HPD has showed that they could be very fast, competitive and reliable," Bouchut said. "Level 5 put in a great effort to prove that again. It was a big surprise to see us run so strong at Laguna Seca without any problems and we did that again today. It's a great way to end to the ALMS season."

Bouchut, who along with Tucker, earned the ALMS LMP2 drivers' championship and also gave the David Stone-led team its second consecutive teams' championship, thanks to five wins this season. Between their ALMS title and Petit Le Mans victory, Level 5 now holds two automatic invitations to next year's 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Tucker enjoyed a particularly successful week, as the now two-time American Le Mans Series champion scored four wins in six races, including victories in both Cooper Tire Prototype Lites races and top honors in the SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Series event. Saturday's Petit Le Mans win was Tucker's 64th career victory.

Level 5's second Microsoft Office 2010-sponsored car of Tucker, Luis Diaz and Marino Franchitti, which started on pole, overcame an early race turbo failure to finish a respectable fifth in class. Franchitti, who made his team debut, set one of the quickest laps of the race, a 1:13.860 lap time, following the successful repair which got the No. 055 car back on track after a one-hour and 15-minute delay.

Harley-Davidson Brings Bikes Over Baghdad to Warrior Zone Grand Opening
BMX team makes first U.S. base visit after four tours to Iraq and Kuwait

MILWAUKEE, Aug. 24, 2011 -- The athletes who make up the Bikes Over Baghdad (BOB) BMX team are used to traveling into war zones to perform on military bases for thousands of U.S. troops. This Friday, the BOB team will travel to Fort Riley in Kansas to entertain troops at the grand opening of the base's Warrior Zone entertainment facility. While it's a shorter trip than they're used to, the team, and its tour sponsor, Harley-Davidson, will deliver the same amount of action, thrill and excitement as when they perform overseas.

Fort Riley is celebrating the grand opening of the 25,000-square-foot Warrior Zone – a facility featuring TVs, computers, Xboxes, PlayStations, pool and poker tables, a full bar, patio, theatre and more – on Friday, August 26. Harley-Davidson is the presenting sponsor of the event, and a major highlight will be two BOB BMX shows at 6:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Friday evening on the base.

The BMX team, made up of Brian Kachinsky, Mykel Larrin, Nate Wessel, Scott Powell, Micah Kranz, Ron Kimler, Dan Norvell, and Kevin Porter , will deliver the unbelievable technical tricks and jumps they perform for audiences worldwide and, for some of them, most recently in the ESPN X Games. The athletes will greet the troops and sign autographs following both shows.

In addition to the BMX shows, Harley-Davidson will host a variety of activities and giveaways throughout the day. The first 100 people to try the H-D Jumpstart motorcycle experience will receive a $25 H-D gift card.

New 2012 H-D models will be on display, and all attendees will be able to enter a sweepstakes for a 2012 H-D Blackline motorcycle, the winner of which will be announced at the end of August. Two hundred lucky guests will also take home a limited edition Captain America movie poster. Harley-Davidson designed and manufactured five replica 1942 WLA Army motorcycles for the film.

    About Bikes Over Baghdad

Following four successful tours to Iraq and Kuwait, BOB has quickly become the most in-demand entertainment for U.S. troops stationed in the Middle East. Military men and women get a temporary escape and enjoyment, and the athletes are able to show their gratitude for those serving our country.

Motorcycle, Motorcycles, Motor Cycle Motorcycle: TRG Goes 1-2 Again; Moves into GTC Class Lead with Win at Mosport

TRG Goes 1-2 Again; Moves into GTC Class Lead with Win at Mosport

BOWMANSVILLE, Ontario, July 26, 2011 -- TRG moved into the GTC class lead by scoring its second one-two finish in a row with another powerful and consistent performance at the Grand Prix of Mosport, the fourth round of American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patron.

This week, Spence Pumpelly in the Racer's Roast/Fox River Coffee No. 66 car passed teammate Dion von Moltke on the final lap in his No. 68 PR Newswire/South African Airways Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car. Two weeks ago at Lime Rock, it was von Moltke who passed Pumpelly on the last lap to create TRG's first ever 1-2 finish in the American Le Mans Series.

"Duncan just keeps getting stronger and stronger with this race being a real testament to his driving, his patience and his racecraft," said the team owner Kevin Buckler. "And I can't say enough about Marc for stepping into the car this week. That should really help him get ready for Mid-Ohio and Baltimore. Dion was a ROCK this weekend and drove his heart out & showed real professionalism in his driving again the whole weekend. We have a great team right now and today it really showed once again."

With both cars running strong and near the front most of the day, Pumpelly who was leading at the time, was tapped by GT leader Dirk Werner in his BMW with just a little more than 30 minutes left in the race. Pumpelly fought off the opponent's punt, which dropped him into fourth, to gradually work his way into second behind von Moltke who was trying to conserve fuel to in order to avoid the fate of Alex Job's No. 23 car that ran out of gas while chasing von Moltke for the lead that he had held for the last 20 laps of the race. Pumpelly, on fresher tires, was able to get by von Moltke to gain the win that he lost at his teammate's hand two weeks earlier.

"Hey, we're teammates and we drive for a great team," said Pumpelly, "but you always want to win and with me on fresher tires and Dion having to conserve his fuel, I was in position to get by him. It was amazing, though, how even the cars were all day long -- a real tribute to the TRG guys."
