COMPACT TRACTORS
The concept of the compact tractor can be said to have its origin in southern Europe where it was used for vineyard work. In the years immediately after World War II, NSU sold a number of its light artillery tractor, the Kettenkrad, for agricultural use, and developments also took place in the Far East. The use of compact tractors spread quickly. In England the British Motor Corporation (BMC) offered a "mini" tractor and the major tractor makers added compact tractors to their ranges.
By the mid-1980s the Japanese firm Hinomoto was making the C174 compact, which is fitted with a 1004cc/61.2cu in three-cylinder diesel engine. It produces 20hp and has nine forward gears and three reverse. The C174 is equipped with a rear-mounted power take-off and a hydraulic linkage.
Shibaura makes compact tractors for Ford and Mitsubishi makes the MT372D model as well as Cub Cadet and Case compact tractors. Iseki is another Japanese manufacturer that makes compact tractors for White, Bolens and Massey-Ferguson in addition to a range of larger conventional machines. In the compact category are tractors such as the TX 2140 and 2160 Models. They are powered by three-cylinder water-cooled engines, 776cc/ 47.35cu in and 849cc/52cu in respectively, in both two- and four-wheel-drive forms, and are suited for use with a wide range of farming implements.
Kubota is a Japanese company that was founded in the last decade of the 19th century. It began manufacturing tractors in the 1960s and claimed to be the fifth largest producer during the mid-80s. One of its products then was the compact B7100D1R a three-cylinder-powered tractor that displaced 762cc/46.5cu in and produces 16hp. It also featured four-wheel drive, independent rear brakes and a three-speed PTO.
Other compact tractor manufacturers around the world include Grille that produces the Model 31 in Italy, Holder that makes the Cultitrac A40, and Howard that produces the Model 200 in Australia. A compact crawler, the V228, is made by Blank in Germany.
