Muscle Cars: Muscle Cars: Concept Cars - Buick, Chevrolet, Chrysler-A Pontiac Monte Carlo
Posted on Tuesday, October 12 @ 21:12:26 UTC by Cars

Muscle Cars A Pontiac Monte Carlo? One of the more entertaining, aspects of the dream car circuit is studying the names that turn up. Buick hatched the name LeSabre—one it still uses to-day—in 1951 on a two-place luxury sports car. And Firebird, Dart, Wildcat, and Futura are just a few of the other nameplates that originated in the land of experimentals.

One of the more curious show cars of the early sixties was the '62 Pontiac Tempest Monte Carlo. Sporting a name that would show up on a Chevrolet personal luxury car nine years later, the Tempest Monte Carlo was a slick little two-seater that sported such niceties as a supercharged 4-cylinder engine, bucket seats with pronounced side bolsters, and a cut-down windshield. And Oldsmobile had its own, perhaps nicer, version of the Monte Carlo. Dubbed the X-215, this car was based on a turbocharged Jetfire. Actually, Pontiac was one of the more active GM divisions in the concept car department. Also debuting in 1962 was the Grand Prix X-400, which not only was supercharged but also sported some of the first rectangular head lights-ever seen on an American car. This model, whose roots were in the X-400s of 1959 to 1961, was updated over the next couple of years, as Pontiac engineers played with vertical headlight concepts and more supercharged V8s. Of greater interest to muscle car enthusiasts, however, was the experimental version of the GTO trotted out by Pontiac in 1964. While similar in appearance to the production car, it sported rectangular headlamps, side-exiting exhaust pipes, chrome reverse rims, and a lowered suspension. Much of the exterior brightwork (for instance, the Goat's grille emblem) was either toned down or removed. The aim of the experimental GTO was to draw attention to the production car. Dodge gave people a glimpse into its future in 1964 with the Charger show car. This vehicle was a two-seat version of the '64 Dodge Polara and it featured all the usual concept car tricks of the day: cut-down windscreen, roll bar with built-in headrest fairings, "lake" pipes, and mag wheels. It also bore a resemblance to the Dodge Charger Funny Cars, thanks to a very similar twin-scooped hood. Power came from a 426 wedge. Then came the Charger II. Unlike its forerunner, the Charger II was a hardtop; it was a showcase for the upcoming production car's radical fastback styling. Except for the absence of wing windows, the roofline was nearly identical to the '66 street car. Also, with one look at the interior you would see virtually the same four-bucket seat office that would arrive in the production car. The major differences were a stretched rear quarter area and exposed rectangular headlights in a grille with horizontal bars instead of the hide-aways set in a vertical motif. According to an article in the February 1 965 issue of Car Craft magazine, "This one-of-a-kind special has a sleek, ultra-modern appearance but not a way out, car-of-the-future design, in fact some of the features are so utilitarian it might well be a car of tomorrow." Which, of course, it was. And there were other Charger show cars as the decade wore on. For 1968 Chrysler rolled out the Charger III, which bore an uncanny resemblance to Chevrolet's '65 Mako Shark II and the production model '68 Corvette. But the ultimate was the '70 Dodge Super Charger. Based on the
'68 Topless Charger idea car, this vehicle was updated with a Plymouth Superbird-style nose cone, wore brilliant (and original) Fire Orange paint with a black hood, had a cut-down 10-inch windshield, and, unlike many of its show-only cousins, came equipped with an honest-to-goodness 440-cubic-inch, 375-horse Magnum V8. Features that never made it to the production line included a rear spoiler that automatically adjusted as speeds increased, vacuum-operated hood vents, side pipes, and twin flip-open gas caps. Traveling with the Super Charger that year was another updated beauty from 1969: the Diamante. This car sprang from the Yellowjacket, which was a two-seat Challenger with a lift-off targa top. Its purpose was to showcase the forth-coming '70 Dodge ponycar. For the 1970 show season, the Diamante, which sported Hemi power (with a 4-speed transmission and 4.10 gears), was given a front fascia with hideaway headlights and a Honey Gold Pearlescent over a yellow base. Its taillights previewed those that would appear on the '72 production Challenger.
