Muscle Cars: Muscle Cars: Concept Cars - Dream On
Posted on Tuesday, October 12 @ 21:10:40 UTC by Cars

Muscle Cars Dream On Fantasies play an important role in the life of every human being. Whether they involve winning the lottery, running off to a tropical island with the man or woman of ones dreams, or designing your own muscle car, everybody has them. Unfortunately, however, few of us get to realize our fantasies.

If you are on automobile designer or engineer, though, you don't have to be satisfied with keeping your dreams in your head. You get paid for letting your wildest automotive fantasies come to life, either on paper or, if you get really lucky, as a show car/experimental. The biggest thrill is to see one of your concepts become a production reality. While fantasy cars have been around since General Motors introduced the Buick Y-Job in 1938, it was during the muscle car era that some of the finest and most influential dream cars came to be. Whether you want to call them "dream cars," "concept cars," or "experimentals," their basic raison d'etre is the same: tantalize the buying public with futuristic designs, showcase cutting-edge technology, and test the publics acceptance of new ideas. At the same time, these automobiles can turn those who see them into potential customers for current models. The first concept car to make it almost intact as a production model was the Chevrolet Corvette, which first appeared in January 1953 at the GM Motorama at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. Public reaction was so favorable that if was rushed into production by June of that year. The introduction of the 'Vette marked the beginning of a love affair between the American public and a two-seat sports car that has lasted more than forty years. The Corvette had a lightweight fiberglass body, which was revolutionary in its day; if was a so a two-seat sports car. This was nothing unusua if you lived in England or Italy, but in North America, it was a fairly off-the-wall idea. It is be-lieved that over four million people viewed the Corvette as it made the Motorama rounds in the United States and Canada that year, and that their acceptance of the new car convinced Chevrolet to forge ahead with production. A similar case developed with the Mustang in 1 962. Ford had already given the go-ahead to build the four-place sporty car, but they could not figure out how best to generate excitement for it among the media and the car-buying public. In the end, Ford decided to produce a couple of show cars: the Mustang and the Mustang II. The Mustang, which debuted at the U.S. Grand Prix in Watkins Glen, New York, in October 1962, was a traditional sports car in almost every sense of the word. It was small, weighing in at a mere 1,148 pounds, had a tiny 1.5-liter V4 power plant that produced a modest 1 09 hp, and seated two people. And like most futuristic show cars, it in-corporated a host of high-tech goodies that would not see production for over a decade, if everórack and pinion steering, midship engine configuration, an aluminum body, retractable headlights, and a hideaway front license plate. The Mustang was received enthusiastically by Car and Driver in its September 1962 issue. "The Mustang shows what Ford Engineering and Styling can do when given a chance," it said. Later in 1962 the Mustang gave way to the less radical Mustang II, which gave away the size and much of the styling of the soon-to-be-released production model. This prototype was a four-seater with bucket seats up front, a bench seat in the rear, and a removable fiberglass hardtop. Among the items that made it into production were the C-shaped side scoops, which lasted from 1965 to 1968 and from 1974 to 1978, and have been brought back on the 1994 Mustang; a deep, oval-shaped grille; and 3-bar vertical tail lamps.
