Cars: 2011 Ford Shelby GT500 Goes Lightweight With Aluminum Engine, Offers Ultimate In
2011 Ford Shelby GT500 Goes Lightweight With Aluminum Engine, Offers Ultimate In Handling
DEARBORN, Mich., Feb. 8-- -- With 550 horsepower and 510 ft.-lb. of torque, Ford's Special Vehicle
Team (SVT) delivers the new Shelby GT500® with a 10 horsepower
increase; an all-new 5.4-liter all-aluminum engine is 102 pounds
lighter than the previous cast-iron engine and uses Ford-patented
plasma-coating technology
-- For 2011, Shelby GT500 offers EPA-projected improved fuel economy in
city and highway from 2010, eliminating the gas guzzler tax
-- The addition of Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS), a new optional
SVT Performance Package, enhanced convertible rigidity and a lowered
ride height contribute to improved driving dynamics and handling
Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT) engineers are taking high performance to a new level with the 2011 Ford Shelby GT500, resulting in a car that has an all-new aluminum-block engine, even better driving dynamics and handling, improved fuel economy and more horsepower than ever.
"The SVT team continues to push the performance standards of the Shelby to even higher levels and better refinement," said Jost Capito, director of global performance vehicles and motorsports business development. "All the changes we made reflect a desire for even better handling and outstanding driving dynamics - from weight savings to improved balance."
Weight savings, new technology headline all-new aluminum engine
The 2011 Shelby GT500 is powered by an all-new aluminum-block 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 engine, which produces 550 horsepower and 510 ft.-lb. of torque, a 10 horsepower increase versus the 2010 model. The engine also is 102 pounds lighter than its predecessor, delivering a better power-to-weight ratio, improved fuel economy, acceleration, handling and steering precision.
"Cutting weight to improve performance is a tradition among hot rodders," said Carroll Shelby, founder of Shelby American. "It might not be as sexy as adding more horsepower or bigger brakes, but shaving pounds off of a car is the single smartest move you can make."
The new engine uses state-of-the-art Plasma Transferred Wire Arc (PTWA) liner coating, a process that applies a 150-micron composite coating that contains nanoparticles on the internal surfaces of engine cylinder bores, replacing cast-iron liners typically used in aluminum engine blocks. The Intellectual Property Owners Education Foundation honored the inventors of the Ford-patented PTWA technology with the 2009 National Inventor of the Year Award.
This is the first Ford application of the technology, and it offers improved overall performance and durability, along with functional benefits of reduced friction between piston rings and cylinder bores, improved heat transfer due to increased surface contact area and a weight savings of 8.5 pounds compared to a typical steel-sleeved aluminum block. A mechanical roughening process provides higher material adhesion for the spray coating.
The PTWA process uses air and electricity to create a plasma jet of 35,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which melts a steel wire that is fed into a rotating spray gun. Using atomized air, the melted steel wire is blown into a specially machined surface of the aluminum-block engine cylinder bore. In the process of melting and applying the metal to the surface, the steel wire oxidizes, creating a composite coating consisting of both iron and iron oxide.
"Ford's Global Research and Advanced Engineering looks to all industries for advanced technologies - and this comes from aerospace. It's the same technology you would find on aircraft engines," said Glenn Jorgensen, SVT powertrain team leader. "We've invented a coating as a replacement for cast iron that delivers improvements in power and performance and fuel economy."
The new engine also has its roots in the iconic Ford GT. The new 5.4-liter engine is an evolution of the GT engine, with improved block structure through the use of a unique bulkhead chilled process and six-bolt billet main bearing caps. This new advanced engine will exceed Ford GT performance with its traditional supercharger technology.
"The Ford GT has solidified itself as one of the world's most coveted supercars. To make improvements to the engine from this supercar and make it available in a Mustang is impressive," said Kerry Baldori, SVT global performance vehicle chief functional engineer. "The aluminum-block engine is robust and strong enough to produce the performance numbers and durability our customers demand."
Increased power and increased fuel economy
The 2011 Shelby GT500 combines power and fuel economy into one impressive package. This 2011 Shelby GT500 will be the first modern Shelby without the gas guzzler tax, thanks to the EPA-projected 23 mpg highway and 15 mpg city it will deliver. This is up from 22 mpg highway and 14 mpg city for the 2010 model.
The 5.4-liter V-8 achieves 80 percent of its torque between 1,750 and 6,250 rpm, giving the car a higher level of performance feel. A larger two-row intercooler for the supercharger system has 40 percent more cooling capacity, helping to make power more consistent in higher ambient conditions.
Fuel economy gains come from the new 102-pound-lighter aluminum-block engine, EPAS and detailed aerodynamic changes to the underside of the vehicle.
Dramatic performance upgrades
New for 2011 is an SVT Performance Package for enthusiasts who want even more performance out of their Shelby GT500 for racetrack-ready driving dynamics. Complete with all-new Goodyear Eagle® F1 SuperCar G: 2 tires that SVT engineers worked directly with Goodyear to develop, the car is ready to race. The tires offer superb dry traction and precise handling, complete with a race-inspired high-performance tread compound.
The optional package also offers unique styling, lighter wheels, a higher rear axle ratio and stiffer springs, and it is available on both the convertible and coupe. Data show the 2011 coupe with the SVT Performance Package is 3.0 seconds faster per lap than the 2010 Shelby GT500 on a 2.3-mile test track.
Carried over from 2010, the 2011 Shelby GT500 features AdvanceTrac®, Ford's stability control system with several options for performance. Calibration of the system for the 2011 Shelby has been uniquely tailored to each vehicle configuration (base or optional) to optimize the performance.
SVT has worked very hard to make EPAS better than the outgoing hydraulic steering system. The addition of EPAS makes for a dramatic contribution to Shelby GT500 driving dynamics, with improved torque build-up and road feel that delivers quicker and more precise steering, increased effort on the racetrack or winding roads, and reduced effort in low-speed parking maneuvers.
Slotted brake dust shields were added to improve brake cooling and handling, and a new pedal box improves clutch and pedal efforts even more. A lowered ride height of 11 millimeters in front and 8 millimeters at the rear provides a sportier attitude and improved handling.
More engine sound, less road noise
For 2011, Shelby GT500 also benefits from NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) improvements. Overall road noise is reduced by 20 percent versus the 2010 Shelby. Actions undertaken to achieve this improvement include additional sound-deadening material on either side of the instrument panel, additional sound absorption behind interior trim panels, and a rear wheel arch liner to reduce noise on gravel or wet surfaces - all resulting in the driver hearing more exhaust and engine sound and less road and air noise.
The Shelby GT500 convertible model features enhanced structural rigidity, with lateral stiffness improved by 12 percent versus the 2010 model. The V-brace has been stiffened by adding gussets. The secondary crossmember also has been stiffened, while a front Z-brace has been added, connecting primary and secondary crossmembers. A-pillar stiffening foam has been added to increase rigidity.
The structural improvements to the convertible gave SVT the opportunity to be more sport-oriented in the chassis tuning, without trading comfort. Along with the chassis and structural improvements, the 2011 model also will get standard 19-inch aluminum wheels.
"One of the biggest changes for this Shelby is that the convertible acts and feels like a coupe," said Jamal Hameedi, SVT chief nameplate engineer. "Before, they had a very different character, and the convertible is taking a big step in the sportiness and handling precision area, without degrading the ride."
GT500 gets a new exhaust for 2011, roaring with an even more aggressive sound than the 2010 model. The 2.75-inch exhaust with all-new tuning helped to deliver the additional 10 horsepower.
Added convenience content
New for 2011 is an optional glass roof, providing customers with a less expensive option than a convertible and without compromising the coupe's versatility, headroom or climate-controlled environment.
The specially formulated glass also protects interior fabric material from solar radiation deterioration and discoloration by reducing solar light transmittance. To help improve acoustics and interior quietness, the glass features a layer of vinyl that reduces noise, vibration and harshness.
Other new convenience technologies include:
-- Standard HID (high-intensity discharge) headlamps
-- MyKey(TM) programmable vehicle key
-- Integrated spotter mirror
-- Fold-down rear headrests
"Whether you're looking to take the GT500 out on the streets or have some fun at the track," Capito says, "this car will satisfy the most discriminating performance driving enthusiasts."

Cars: Chesley Files National Class Action Against Toyota
Chesley Files National Class Action Against Toyota
CINCINNATI, Feb. 8 -- Stanley M. Chesley from the Cincinnati, Ohio-based law firm of Waite, Schneider, Bayless & Chesley Co., L.P.A. today filed a national federal class action lawsuit against Toyota Motor Corporation and other Toyota affiliates. The case is based on the sudden acceleration defect in millions of Toyota automobiles that has caused injuries and deaths.
The national class action lawsuit was filed in federal court in the Eastern District of Kentucky in Covington, Kentucky. The Federal lawsuit alleges violation of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act, fraudulent concealment, consumer protection act violation, false advertising, breach of warranties, breach of contracts, and strict product liability. Chesley alleges that Toyota misrepresented the problem as being caused by floormats and has still not corrected it. "Toyota has long known about the defect and has done too little, too late to correct it," says Mr. Chesley. "This problem is speeding out of control and Toyota is endangering the lives of innocent people."
The company has received numerous complaints of sudden, unintended acceleration. Many consumers are fearful of driving their cars. The cars have lost value due to this problem, creating an economic hardship for its customers in already tough economic times.
In addition to seeking compensatory and punitive damages, Chesley has requested injunctive relief requiring Toyota to provide replacement vehicles to members of the Class until their vehicles have been repaired or replaced; to provide replacement parts to dealerships first; to provide counseling services to Class members who have suffered emotional distress as a result of being forced to drive defective, dangerous vehicles; and requiring Toyota to reform their lease and finance contracts with members of the Class and to cease collecting lease or purchase payments from Class members whose cars are defective as alleged in the Complaint.

Cars: 2011 Hyundai Sonata GLS Tops Popular Competitors, Including Premium Brands, in
2011 Hyundai Sonata GLS Tops Popular Competitors, Including Premium Brands, in ALG Residual Value Index
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Feb. 8 -- Hyundai's completely redesigned 2011 Sonata that delivers best-in-class fuel economy and 200 horsepower is setting the standard for residual values as well. Right out of the box, the Hyundai Sonata GLS with automatic transmission received an impressive 36-month residual value of 54 percent of manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) from Automotive Lease Guide (ALG), the industry benchmark for residual values and a leading provider of data and consulting services to the automotive industry. The residual value topped popular competitive 2010 models from Toyota, Nissan, Ford, and Chevrolet, in addition to premium brands such as Lexus, BMW and Mercedes.
This represents the lowest depreciation in the midsize car segment. The 2011 Sonata even outperforms Honda, depreciating $640 over a three-year period less than a comparably-equipped 2010 model year Accord. Strong residuals add to Sonata's value equation, indicating higher trade-in value for buyers and lower monthly payment for lessees.
The new 2011 Sonata, built at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, has attributes which set a new standard in the midsize car category, such as a best-in-class 35 mpg highway fuel economy rating thanks to a new 2.4-liter Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) four-cylinder engine, new six-speed manual and automatic transmissions and highly refined aerodynamics. A well-equipped 2.4-liter GDI I4 GLS model, offering 198 horsepower and six-speed manual transmission begins at $19,195. A fully-equipped Sonata Limited with a navigation package and six-speed automatic transmission is $27,395.
The 2011 Sonata represents a modern approach to the traditional midsize sedan segment using advanced four-cylinder engines, emotional design and luxury features, all combined with Hyundai's strong value proposition. Sonata brings advancements like HD Radio Technology(TM) with Multicasting and standard Bluetooth connectivity to the segment for the first time ever.
"Hyundai's model lineup continues to evolve and the completely redesigned 2011 Sonata punctuates the tremendous evolution in Hyundai performance, design, safety and quality," said Troy Saito, manager of pricing management, Hyundai Motor America. "Strong residual value has become another element in Hyundai's overall value equation, reducing the overall cost of ownership and allowing us to offer strong lease options to our customers."
Hyundai's world-class quality has significantly improved the brand's residual values over the past few years. Hyundai's premium models are driving the improvement according to data released in ALG's January/February edition. The 2010 Genesis sedan achieves 47.5 percent retention of MSRP, the all-new Genesis Coupe achieves an outstanding 52.3 percent and the 2010 Veracruz retains 49 percent of its value over a 36-month period. The fuel-efficient 2010 Hyundai Elantra is also a star for the Hyundai lineup, retaining 48.3 percent of its value over a three-year period and the all-new Hyundai Tucson retained 50.6 percent of MSRP.
Sonata is the second vehicle in Hyundai's 24/7 version 2.0 product initiative (seven new models in the next 24 months) following on the heels of the all-new Tucson. The all-new Sonata is available now at dealerships across the country.

Cars: Toyota Announces Voluntary Recall on 2010 Model Year Prius and 2010 Lexus HS 2
Toyota Announces Voluntary Recall on 2010 Model Year Prius and 2010 Lexus HS 250h Vehicles to Update ABS Software
Inspection of Power Steering Hose Position on Certain 2010 Camry Vehicles Also Announced Recalls Underscore Toyota's Commitment to Address All Vehicle Quality and Safety Issues Promptly and Effectively
TORRANCE, Calif., Feb. 9 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today announced it will conduct a voluntary safety recall on approximately 133,000 2010 Model Year Prius vehicles and 14,550 Lexus Division 2010 HS 250h vehicles to update software in the vehicle's anti-lock brake system (ABS). No other Toyota, Lexus, or Scion vehicles are involved in this recall.
The ABS, in normal operation, engages and disengages rapidly (many times per second) as the control system senses and reacts to tire slippage. Some 2010 Model Year Prius and 2010 HS 250h owners have reported experiencing inconsistent brake feel during slow and steady application of brakes on rough or slick road surfaces when the ABS is activated in an effort to maintain tire traction.
Toyota has responded to owner concerns with a running production change for 2010 Prius that was introduced last month, improving the ABS response time, as well as the system's overall sensitivity to tire slippage. The production change for the HS 250h is planned for later this month.
"We're committed to doing everything we can - as fast as we can - to restore consumer trust in Toyota, and these recalls are part of this effort," said Jim Lentz, President and Chief Operating Officer, Toyota Motor Sales. "We regret the inconvenience this recall will cause to Prius and HS 250h owners, and will do our best with the support of our dealers to make sure that it is conducted in the most trouble-free manner possible."
Mr. Lentz continued: "As part of the quality improvement program announced by Toyota President Akio Toyoda last week, our company is undertaking a top to bottom review to ensure that our vehicles meet our own high standards of safety and reliability, now and for the future. We are taking steps to implement more stringent quality control across the company, to investigate customer complaints more aggressively and to respond more quickly to any safety issues we identify."
The recall will allow Toyota dealers to perform the software update on 2010 Prius vehicles sold prior to this running production change. Only Prius vehicles produced since May 2009 and all HS 250h vehicles are subject to this recall. First- and second-generation Prius vehicles use a different ABS and are not involved in this campaign.
The ABS on the Lexus HS 250h is similar in design to the Prius. The software adjustment planned for HS 250h production and dealer modification is being finalized and will be announced very soon.

The poster, dubbed "Drive-Thru," helps commemorate the Super Bowl-bound Colts run through the playoffs, with a final stop in Miami, Florida, on Feb. 7, when Indianapolis plays NFC champion New Orleans Saints. Posters are available as long as supplies last and are limited to one (1) per person.
Posters are available at the following Toyota locations: Andy Mohr Toyota in Avon, Beck Toyota in Indianapolis, Butler Toyota in Indianapolis, Ed Martin Toyota in Anderson, O'Brien Toyota in Indianapolis, Kokomo Toyota in Kokomo, Royal South Toyota in Bloomington, Tom Wood Toyota in Indianapolis, Toyota of Muncie, Toyota of Richmond, and Wiese Toyota in Taylorville.
Last August, the Colts named Toyota the team's "Official Vehicle" for the 2009-2010 football season. Elements of this program included Toyota vehicles displayed at all entrances to Lucas Oil Stadium, as well as a special Toyota Zone seating area in the stadium's northeast corner. Other promotional aspects of the program included sponsorship of the starting line-up announcements, as well as Tri-vision, Jumbotron and concourse signage.
Toyota has a large manufacturing presence in Indiana, with a plant in Princeton (Gibson County) that produces the Highlander, Sienna and Sequoia. The Toyota Camry is assembled in Lafayette by SIA.

America's Road Team Warns Against Distracted Driving at the Portland International Auto Show
Elite Professional Drivers Also Offer Winter Driving Tips
PORTLAND, Ore., Jan. 29 -- America's Road Team, professional truck drivers with millions of accident-free miles, today brought ATA's new high-tech image trailer to the Portland International Auto Show to discuss the dangers of distracted driving and offer winter driving tips to show attendees.
The Portland International Auto Show provided the perfect backdrop for the team of professional drivers to share their message of road safety and how essential it is to remain focused on the road. The Captains also discussed the importance of creating safe driving habits in order to keep all motorists safe on the road.
"Being at the Portland Auto Show offers an opportunity to reach a great number of people," said Greg Nauretz, a professional truck driver from YRC. "When talking to people about the dangers of distracted driving and how even a two second break in concentration can cause an accident - you see it makes an impact."

Cars: Jaguar - 75 Years Looking Forward
Jaguar - 75 Years Looking Forward
MAHWAH, N.J., Jan. 29-- This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Jaguar name and 75 years of looking forward, designing and building cars that represent the very best of technical innovation, design leadership and sporting success.
Mike O'Driscoll, Managing Director of Jaguar Cars, said, "In 2010, we celebrate our past, and 75 years of designing and building cars that celebrate the art of automobile making. We're also celebrating the promise of the future, and the introduction of the all-new XJ sedan. In just three years, we've completely revitalized the Jaguar line-up with the launch of three beautiful, fast cars."
During the year we will celebrate our 75th anniversary at some of the world's most glamorous automotive settings, including the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Revival in the U.K.; the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance in Florida and the Concours d'Elegance at Pebble Beach in the U.S. and at the Mille Miglia classic in Italy. Jaguar is also returning to the racetrack with its new JaguarRSR XKR GT2 and will compete in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS).
Just a few years ago, we set out to re-make Jaguar and to revitalize the model range. We started in 2008 with the introduction of the all-new, award-winning XF. This four-door, five-seat car has the looks of a coupe and the heart of a sports car. In 2009, we re-engineered the XK coupe and convertible, in the process creating one of the world's great grand tourers. Very shortly in 2010, we will begin selling the ground-breaking, new 2011 XJ which incorporates all of the virtues that make a great Jaguar.
William Lyons founded Swallow Sidecars in 1922, and went on to create a range of "SS"-branded motorcycle sidecars and automobiles in the 1920s and early 1930s. When it came to the launch of the all-new SS 100 in 1935, Lyons wanted a new and evocative name for his cars. After asking his advertising agency for suggestions, Lyons chose a daring new name, and the SS 100 sports car became the world's first Jaguar.
The Jaguar name was an ideal choice. It represented a feline grace and elegance, plus the power and agility that set his cars apart. He once said that a car "was the closest thing we can create to something that is alive;" a sentiment that has stood the test of time. That new brand name captured the essence of all of the cars created from that point forward.
Over the years, Jaguar has built some of the world's most iconic cars. The XK120, introduced in the late 1940s, was an instant sensation and the most glamorous sports car of the period. The C Type and D Type race cars that followed dominated motor racing in the 1950s. The E-Type, launched in the heady 1960s, has repeatedly been called the most beautiful car ever built, and it defined a whole generation. Sports cars have always defined Jaguar, but the company has also built some of the industry's most memorable sedans like the Mark II of the early 1960s and the renowned XJ.
Ian Callum, Jaguar Design Director, said, "Jaguar design over the next 75 years must respect and reflect on the past 75 while continuing to push boundaries of technology, luxury and sporting style. Designing cars with a presence that demands a turn of the head and an allure that pulls at the heart has been central to the Jaguar brand throughout the years."
Callum continues, "A successful piece of design should stand the test of time, holding its own through passing fashions. Looking at the present with the XK, XF and all-new XJ and with an eye on the future, we will continue to innovate and set the benchmark, not only in automotive design, but in luxury premium design as a whole. Jaguar has a range of cars that are as iconic today as they were when launched. That's a testament to Jaguar's legacy in creating beautiful fast cars."
Mike O'Driscoll summed things up, "The development of our new range of cars is all part of making Jaguar the modern, sporting company that it was under our founder Sir Williams Lyons; a company that made its name creating cars that were innovative, exciting and always original."
