NISSAN DREAM CAR HISTORY

Car review on Nissan

Like most Japanese car-makers, it took Nissan almost two decades to refine its dream-car program into something dial was relevant and palatable for a worldwide audience. Early efforts, such as die 1970 126X, were characterized by dubious extremes and a certain lack of sophistication. However, Nissan did have some interesting ideas, including inflatable passenger airbags as early as 1971.

The dream car that catapulted Nissan into a more serious arena was the MID-4, which was a major Nissan project. It was first seen in 1985 as a Ferrariesque pure show car, but had matured by 1987 to look like a credible exotic rival for Porsche.

It was engineered around a 330bhp longitudinal 3.0-litre V-six twin-turbo engine and boasted four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering. There were serious noises about tills becoming a production prospect as a new Nissan super car, probably with a V-twelve engine and two-wheel drive, ready to do battle with Ferrari et al. That plan was scotched as the limes did not favor such "hypercar" projects, although the production 300ZX of 1 989 was hailed as "the first Japanese super car".

The elegant 1986 CUE-X and ARC-X of 1987 also marked a new maturity. Here was a pair of super-sleek, beautifully proportioned four-door saloons, which were also highly aerodynamic. The ARC-X featured four-wheel drive, loin-wheel steer and a staggering array of electronics.

Pike dreams

Perhaps Nissan's most celebrated dream cars were the so-called Pike series of boutique models. Nissan set up a sub-division to manufacture special models, or "niche" cars in marketing language, The first of these was the Be-1, shown at Tokyo in 1985 and so well received that it went into production 18 months later, Its Mini-style round headlamps and retro-styling cues overcame die fact that it was based on die dowdy one-liter Micra, and it was widely admired.

Then in 1987 came die Pao (a 1940s-style runabout) and the humorously named S-Cargo, a bizarre arch-shaped van, which achieved tremendous popularity. Another design from this series (but destined not to go into production) was the 1989 Chapeau, a curious glass-house car, which looked somewhat like a telephone kiosk (booth) on wheels.

Perhaps the most charming of all the Pike cars was die Figaro, initially shown as a concept car but actually put into production. This heralded a new era of "retro" design in the car world, for here was a 194-Os-style chrome-and-round-headlamps little car. Some details were appealing, like the electric canvas roof and chromed CD player; others were more dubious, like die all-white interior and toggle switches, which looked like Victorian cutlery. Also, it may have had the appearance of a sports car but its 1.2-litre Micra engine and automatic transmission did nothing to make it behave like one.

From Boga to Duad

Nissan lost the plot a little with the 1989 Boga, its idea of a new city car. The concept was clever, to fit a four-door shell with luxury car space into a but the 1.5-litre Boga's style missed the mark, and it perhaps got less attention than it deserved. Similar styling marred the 1991 Cocoon six-seater, whose when it sensed that the driver was drowsy, it would spray a refreshing scent into cockpit.

Nissan's 1989 DV-X was more down-by Yoshio Maezawa, stylist of the 300ZX The 1991 TBI-X show coupe looked like a future Bluebird (it didn’t), its main feature was computer-controlled adjustable pedals and steering.

The 1991 Tri-X show coupe looked disappointingly back to the 1980s, and was clearly targeted at an American audience; this sort of thing reappeared in 1993 with the Marcello Gandini-styled AP-X. Much more engaging was its quirky Duad show car, which revived in spirit its 1987 Saurus. Intended as a modern interpretation of the immortal Loins 7, it weighed merely 103 lb (170kg). Its quirkiness stemmed from the fact that the 1.0-litre engine was mounted alongside tile driver, forcing the passenger's seat to be sited 15in (38cm) further back. Nissan hoped to launch die Duad as another in its Pike boutique series, but this never happened.

From Kasheen to Trailrunner
A different fate awaited the Rasheen, shown at Tokyo in 1 993. This extremely box-like concept, described as "a totally actually made it into production. Its compact dimensions, practical Sunny endeared it to Japanese drivers, and led to a crew-cab-type (four-door pick-up) show ear called the XIX in 1995.

Combining two-seater drop-top excitement with four-seater practicality AA-X, but the awkwardly colliding shapes looked uncomfortable, even if die idea itself was sound: to combine Nissan follow-ed a happier path with its 1997 4x4 concept vehicle, the 4Yailrunner. Sporty styling crossed the bridge between die coupe and off-road worlds, and a unique design feature was a prominently displayed sliding spare wheel in die tail. Its 190 bhp 2.0-litre engine and sequential six-sliced CVT gearbox also promised a sporty temperament.
